Position Start Date: January 5, 2026

Required Degree: PhD in Arabic Language, Arabic Literature, Linguistics, or related field.

The required degree must be completed by the start date.

Experience:

Required

  • Experience teaching Arabic as a second language to advanced-level students.
  • Near-native fluency in modern spoken and written Arabic, with the ability to analyze and teach complex literary texts.
  • Advanced proficiency in English to teach Arabic effectively to English-speaking students and communicate with non-Arabic speaking office staff and faculty.
  • Experience using Learning Management Systems (LMS), such as Canvas or BYU’s Learning Suite, or the ability to learn such systems quickly.
  • Willingness to participate in training and professional development in language pedagogy and second-language acquisition.

Preferred

  • Background in Arabic literature, literary analysis, or comparative literary studies.
  • Familiarity with language-proficiency assessment criteria and experience developing fair and accurate assessments.
  • Knowledge of Second Language Acquisition (SLA) theory and language-teaching pedagogy to develop curriculum materials and lesson plans, particularly in contexts where commercially published instructional materials are limited.
  • Experience with discussing stylistic features in Arabic literature and expository prose.
  • Ability to evaluate reading comprehension, vocabulary mastery, and textual interpretation through structured assessments.

Duties/Expectations:

  • Teach Arabic language courses: 411R, 424R, 495R
  • Provide individual and small-group instruction to support student learning and reinforce course content.
  • Participate in professional development workshops and implement recommendations for instructional improvement.
  • Develop a course syllabus and upload course materials to Canvas or BYU Learning Suite.
  • Respond promptly and professionally to communications from the Asian & Near Eastern Languages Department.
