The project
This consultancy will provide technical assistance and support to Search’s National Peace Education Curriculum initiative in Tunisia, under the supervision of Search’s Children & Youth division. The initiative aims to increase the resilience and positive normative values of Tunisian children and youth towards their local, national and global environment and society. It is funded by Global Affairs Canada and will take place between April 2020 and March 2022. In partnership with the Tunisian Ministry of Education, the project includes the development of a peace education curriculum for primary schools (grades 4-6, ages 8-12 years) including a research phase, a development phase and a testing phase. The project also includes another component that builds on the creation of 15 peace clubs (for ages 15-20 years) in different governorates with the aim of transmitting a culture of non-violent communication and civic engagement among youth.Topics covered in the curriculum will include environmental awareness and sustainability, natural resources and conflict, violence and conflict management, migration and employment in addition to central values of global citizenship and peace.
Summary of position
Search for Common Ground seeks a Consultant to provide technical assistance and support to the team developing and piloting a peace education curriculum for primary school aged children, as well as the creation of 15 peace clubs in Tunisia.
The Consultant will work under the guidance of the Children & Youth division’s program manager and will be responsible for providing international expertise and technical support on peace education and curriculum development and piloting throughout the consultancy.
Key Deliverables
The Consultant will:
Review and provide technical feedback and input on the curriculum methodology, content and materials, testing, and monitoring and evaluation tools and process in writing and through virtual meetings. Note that documents and meetings will be in Arabic and English, and the consultant will need to speak and read Arabic and English proficiently.
Identify and provide access to relevant resources on key frameworks, principles, best practices, standards, and materials on age- and developmentally-appropriate peace education in formal and non-formal education settings.
Identify key areas for capacity building for the technical committee leading the curriculum development and provide training (as requested)
Develop knowledge products (such as a guidance note) on age- and developmentally-appropriate peace education, drawing from international standards and best practice, as well as learning from previous Search programs and existing methodologies as requested
Duration
The consultancy will last from May through December 2021. The Consultant is expected to work 25 days on this assignment. The consultancy agreement may be extended to provide further support to the implementation of the program beyond December 2021, pending additional funding.
Requirements
The Consultant should have:
Significant relevant experience in developing and testing peace education curricula for ages 8-12 years in formal and non-formal education settings. Experience of the same for ages 13-20 years is also preferred.
Proven experience of capacity strengthening or training on peace education curriculum development and related topics, such as engaging hard-to-reach children and youth, preventing violent extremism, environment and natural resource-based conflict, and more.
Demonstrated experience in developing concise and clear knowledge products, such as guidance notes for program development and design
Excellent oral and written communication in English and Arabic
Strong knowledge and experience of the Middle East and North Africa region at a minimum, and of the Tunisia context and education system preferred
Experience in online communication and virtual coordination
Ability to establish and maintain good working relations with individuals of diverse backgrounds and cultures.
