Research Associate (Political Economy)

Department/Team: Resident Scholars

Period: Part Time (20-25 hours/week, no benefits)

Compensation: $25/hour

Location: Washington, DC (Currently virtual due to the pandemic)

This is a part-time non-exempt position under the Fair Labor Standards Act. This position is eligible for telework under the AGSIW telework policy with attendance of required staff meetings either in-person or virtually.

About AGSIW

The Arab Gulf States Institute in Washington (AGSIW), launched in 2015, is an independent, nonprofit institution dedicated to providing expert research and analysis of the social, economic, and political dimensions of the Gulf Arab states and key neighboring countries and how they affect domestic and foreign policy. AGSIW focuses on issues ranging from politics and security to economics, trade, and business; from social dynamics to civil society and culture. Through programs, publications, and scholarly exchanges the institute seeks to encourage thoughtful debate and inform the U.S. foreign-policy, business, and academic communities regarding this critical geostrategic region.

Job Summary

Provide research assistance and support to the resident scholar of political economy at AGSIW and occasionally to the institute’s other scholars. At the direction of the scholar, conduct research on Gulf political economy, business politics, finance, macroeconomics, foreign policy, and U.S. policy toward the region. Monitor contemporary developments in the Gulf states and U.S. policy, including reviews of regional and international media. Source data, compile bibliographies, conduct literature reviews, and write briefs on relevant topics. Create charts and graphics for AGSIW publications. Provide communications and logistical support to resident scholars, and perform additional tasks as requested.

Qualifications

Some graduate work expected, MA degree preferred but not required. ABDs and doctoral candidates in economics, international affairs, political science, or related area with exposure to Middle East politics and economics are encouraged to apply. Applicants should demonstrate a strong academic record as well as outstanding research, writing, and analytical skills. Native-level fluency in English required. Arabic and other language capabilities, such as Mandarin and Farsi, are a plus.

Candidates with an academic or professional background in quantitative analysis, finance, trade, investment, and labor markets are encouraged to apply. Applications from individuals with demonstrated knowledge of or interest in technology trends in Gulf Arab states are especially welcomed.Remote access to academic libraries and research databases is a plus. Candidates based in the Washington, DC area are preferred but those intending to work remotely will be considered.
