The Elahé Omidyar Mir-Djalali Institute of Iranian Studies at the University of Toronto invites applications for a Limited-Term Research Associate for a three-year appointment. The anticipated start date is June 1, 2021.

The candidate would be responsible for assessing, organizing, and compiling an online bibliographic inventory of the Tavakoli Archive and writing grant proposals to digitize the Archive. In addition to planning for the security, sustainability and public accessibility of the Archive, the selected candidate must prepare bibliographies on selected topics and participate in the supervision of students and volunteers.

With over 100,000 volumes, the Tavakoli Archive includes approximately 10,000 rare nineteenth-century Persian, Arabic, Urdu, and Hindi lithographic books published in India, Iran, and Iraq, as well as a much more extensive collection of local, regional, and national Persian newspapers, popular magazines, and professional journals. It contains over 30,000 volumes of printed books on history, law, economics, literature, art, and culture, as well as a unique collection of elementary and high-school textbooks from the late 19th century to the mid-1970s. The archival material in the collection includes unpublished manuscripts, business ledgers, privileged reports, personal diaries, local and national maps, photographs, postcards, and various highly distinctive ephemera, including political pamphlets, leaflets, flyers, posters, and petitions from different periods of modern Iranian history.

Qualifications:
The successful candidate must hold a Ph.D. in Iranian Studies and its cognate disciplines, possess an excellent command of Persian and reading knowledge of Urdu and Arabic. In addition to exceptional writing skills in English, the candidate must have a working knowledge of printed sources and online databases for Persian periodicals, printed books, and archival material and be able to perform complex online bibliographic searches. The mastering of the Chicago Manual of Style, working knowledge of different transliteration systems (LC, IJMES, EI, EIr, and Iranian Studies) and archival scanning, as well as proven skills in managing and editing social media content are also vital.

The candidate should be a highly motivated, enthusiastic, innovative, and collaborative researcher, have excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, and be able to work independently to meet strict deadlines. They must also be able to perform manual tasks such lifting and relocating boxes of books and periodicals.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education – PhD in Iranian Studies

Experience – Demonstrated experience or 3 of years advanced research in Iranian Studies

Skills – Advanced bibliographical research in Persian

Other – Working knowledge of Microsoft applications, Outlook, Excel, Word
