The Southeast Immigrant Freedom Initiative (SIFI) of the Southern Poverty Law Center (SIFI) seeks an experienced administrative assistant with dedicated commitment to immigrants’ rights to serve as an Administrative Assistant in our Lumpkin, Georgia office to support and help expand our legal advocacy.
SIFI’s Lumpkin, Georgia office provides free legal services to immigrants detained at the Stewart Detention Center. SIFI opened its doors in Lumpkin in 2017, and has since opened three additional SIFI offices representing clients detained by ICE in Georgia and Louisiana. SIFI’s Lumpkin team works in close collaboration with colleagues in other offices across the Deep South, including Ocilla, Folkston, Atlanta, Miami, Montgomery, and New Orleans.
Under supervision of SIFI staff, the Administrative Assistant will assist the SIFI Lumpkin legal team with case management and support all aspects of our work, including tasks such as filing preparation and support, processing faxes and mailings, organization and management of electronic and physical case files, and other special projects. The Administrative Assistant may also be asked to assist with other tasks related to legal casework or case development, and/or other work related to the mission, vision and values of SIFI and IJP.
Immigrants, the formerly incarcerated, and members of historically marginalized communities, as well as people who have roots in and around Stewart County, are particularly encouraged to apply. Although speaking a foreign language is not required, candidates that have intermediate or higher proficiency in a language such as Arabic, Creole, French, Hindi, Spanish, Urdu or other languages are highly encouraged to apply.
Primary Job Functions:
Assists SIFI staff with case management and administrative support as requested;
Handles printing, copying, scanning, and distribution of documents as directed, including within SIFI’s case management system;
Creates and maintains electronic and physical legal files;
Processes requisitions, invoices, and expense vouchers as directed;
Receives, sorts, and distributes incoming and outgoing mail, packages, faxes, etc.;
Catalogs, orders, and maintains office supplies;
Provides administrative process support to staff on mail, FedEx, interoffice mail, postage meter, fax machine, printers, copiers, supplies, phone systems, outlook calendar, IT help ticket system, etc.;
Serves as a point of contact for other departments across SPLC, as needed, to maintain operations of the SIFI Lumpkin office;
Assists staff, and others as directed, with travel arrangements, including hotel, airfare and rental car reservations, as needed; and
Works in close collaboration with other Administrative Assistants across SIFI and IJP.
Qualifications –
Education and Related Work Experience:
At least three years of office administration or its equivalent; and
High school diploma or GED.
Knowledge, skills and abilities:
Strong command of typing and using a laptop computer issued by the organization;
Strong command of using the internet, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Excel;
Comfort and willingness to learn new computer applications, such as an expense reporting system, timesheet reporting system, legal case management system, digital scanner and copy machine, digital fax machine, Adobe Acrobat Pro, and Zoom pro;
Ability to work on delicate issues in a compassionate and sensitive manner;
Must have strong attention-to-detail, ability to establish priorities (or ask for assistance), and meet deadlines;
Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced work environment;
Strong organizational skills, follow-through, and flexibility around changing priorities and deadlines;
Ability to work effectively as part of a team to develop and support new cases and legal initiatives on behalf of migrant communities;
Commitment to the ideals of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion; and
Commitment to fostering an anti-racist work culture and to anti-racist principles and learning.
Other Special Considerations:
This job is performed under general office conditions, and is not subject to any strenuous physical demands or dangerous conditions.

Due to COVID-19, our offices are currently closed and staff is working remotely. If this position is filled while our offices remain closed, the new employee will work remotely until the offices reopen. We are not asking newly hired employees to relocate while the offices are closed.
