These positions are open to the general public and to all current city employees covered under the terms of the City’s collective bargaining agreement with American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME)- BARGAINING UNIT1, 3, 4 & 5.

Number of Positions: Multiple vacancies
Duties: Under immediate supervision, performs routine manual and clerical tasks at a Chicago Public Library, and performs related duties as required. Places books on shelves in accordance with alphabetical and/or numerical classification systems. Locates materials on library shelves and delivers to patrons. Inspects shelves to ensure books are correctly shelved by call number and neatly arranged. Pulls and relocates improperly shelved books. Puts reading room desks and displays in proper order Packs and unpacks library materials. Answers telephone, takes messages, and refers callers to appropriate parties. Charges and discharges library materials using a personal computer and the automated circulation system. Processes applications for library cards by entering patron data into computer terminals. Retrieves books from book drops, loads books onto carts or gurneys and transports them to designated library sections for processing. Performs other routine clerical duties, as required.
LOCATION: Various locations throughout District
DAYS OFF: Two days off per week
SHIFT: Will be required to work some Evenings and Weekends
HOURS: 80 hours per month to be scheduled during normal unit hours

Qualifications
Willingness and ability to perform the duties of the job.
NOTE: This position requires candidates to complete a Willing and Able Questionnaire.
NOTE: Persons offered employment must pass all pre-employment exams prior to appointment.
NOTE: Physical day to day responsibilities for this title may include the ability to push carts on wheels, as well as lift and carry library materials. Ability to stand for extended or continuous periods of time. Ability to bend , stretch, twist or reach out with one’s body arms or legs. Ability to climb staircases, ladders and or step stools.
SELECTION REQUIREMENTS
This position requires applicants to complete an interview which will include a written exercise and/or a skills assessment test as part of the interview. The interviewed candidate(s) possessing the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position, based on the oral and written parts of the interview will be selected.
Preference will be given to candidates possessing the following:
a) Persons who reside in District 6 based on address/zip code listed on the application.
b) Fluency in the Spanish language.
c) Fluency in the Polish language.
d) Fluency in the Arabic language.
e) Fluency in the Hindi language.
f) Fluency in the Mandarin language.
VETERANS PREFERENCE NOTE: The City of Chicago offers Veterans Preference to both current, active military personnel AND military personnel who have served in the Armed Forces of the United States and have received an honorable or general discharge. Eligible candidates must have at least six months of active duty documented. In order to receive the veterans preference, candidates need to indicate whether or not they are a veteran by answering “yes” or “no” to the question on the online application that asks, “Are you currently serving on active duty for at least six months in the Armed Forces of the United States OR have you served in the Armed Forces of the United States on active duty for at least six months and received an honorable or general discharge?” In addition, you must attach documentation to verify your military service. For veterans, you must attach a copy of your DD214 to your online application which includes character of service status OR a letter from the United States Veterans Administration on official stationary stating dates of service and character of service. For active military personnel, you must attach a letter from your Commanding Officer on official stationary verifying your active duty, length of service, and character of service in the Armed Forces of the United States AND a copy of your military ID to your online application. Failure to answer the question and attach the required documentation will result in you not being considered for the Veterans Preference.
Evaluation: Your initial evaluation will be based on information provided on the application form and documents submitted with the application. Applications must be submitted by the individual applicant. No second party applicants will be accepted.
Residency Requirement: All employees of the City of Chicago must be actual residents of the City as outlined in 2-152-050 of the City of Chicago Municipal Code. Proof of residency will be required.
