This position acts as the front door of the University of Kansas. Attendants are very often the first point of contact guests have at KU and are to treat all guests, students, faculty and staff in a friendly and helpful manner.
Job Description
40% Customer Service. Employee must be able to communicate in a clear and friendly manner. The customer base is very diverse including those with disabilities, elderly, first-time visitors, international students, vendors, contractors and public officials to name a few. Attendants provide information about parking including rules and regulations, maps and forms, and accurate instruction on procedures for special parking. Attendants must work independently as a supervisor is not always readily available. They must use their discretion and best judgment to accommodate administrative support when requested. There is a delicate balance in providing accurate information and keeping traffic moving. Attendants must keep track of daily campus events and department locations. They must continuously be knowledgeable of the university and the surrounding community.
30% Permit Issuance and Traffic Movement. Booth attendants must be familiar with over 50 different types of permits issued on the Lawrence campus. They are expected to be familiar with permits issued by the University of Kansas Medical Center, and other special permits written by the Parking business office. Attendants must continuously check the booth email account to keep up to date on special reserved parking stalls and their guests. They must be alert to emergency situations and vehicles. The booths are placed in the middle of a driving lane dealing with a tremendous amount of traffic, over 2,000 vehicles daily. Attendants issue five types of permits from the booth, the use of which must be explained to the customer (providing direction on where to park and where buildings are located) while keeping the flow of traffic moving.
15% Accessibility Monitoring and Traffic Statistics. As vehicles with accessible placards or medical parking permits enter campus, attendant stops them to check that vehicles have all required documentation to access Jayhawk Boulevard and to park in the restricted stalls. Attendants also keep track of statistical information of vehicle patterns through the booths to assist the Parking Department and the Parking Commission when considering rule changes.
5% Booth Runs. Booth attendants report illegal entry to the campus by recording the date, time, booth, license tag, make and model of the vehicle for each “run” that occurs, to the office, so accuracy is extremely important.
5% Training. Attendants train new student employees and full-time officers on the rules and regulations of operating the information booths. Booth employees help update the information booth manual each year that is used for the training of these employees.
5% Athletic/Special Events/Other Duties. Attendant will work athletic and other special events outside regularly scheduled hours. This requires selling parking spaces, setting up barricades, directing traffic in lots and restricting the flow of traffic. Attendants keep the information booths clean inside and out and keep the booths well supplied. Supervisor is advised of needed repairs if attendant is unable to make the repair. Other duties as assigned.
