ARA212Y5Y: Introductory Arabic

Course description:
This introductory course is designed for beginners, i.e., students with NO prior knowledge of the Arabic language. The course provides a basic proficiency in Modern Standard Arabic. The students will have ample practice of reading and writing the Arabic alphabet and will master the Arabic sounds and their phono-syntactic features. A foundation of grammar will familiarize the students with word formation, word order, and sentence structures. By the end of the course, the students should be able to fully read Arabic, comprehend simple reading, produce complete sentences to express basic information orally and in writing, and to conduct basic conversations in Modern Standard Arabic.

Class schedule: Mondays and Wednesdays 9-11:00 (Online synchronous)

Sessional dates of appointment: September 1, 2021-April 30, 2022

Salary:
Sessional Lecturer I – $16,979.34 inclusive of vacation pay (1.0 FCE)

Sessional Lecturer I Long Term – $17,738.50 inclusive of vacation pay (1.0 FCE)

Sessional Lecturer II – $18,171.16 inclusive of vacation pay (1.0 FCE)

Sessional Lecturer III – $18,603.80 inclusive of vacation pay (1.0 FCE)

Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.

Minimum qualifications:
Applicants must have a completed a graduate level degree in the relevant area of the course. Demonstrated experience teaching university-level Arabic language courses and cultural studies. Native or near native Arabic language fluency is required.

Preferred qualifications:
Demonstrated excellence in teaching. Preference will be given those with experience teaching a similar on-line language course. Preference in hiring is given to qualified individuals advanced to the rank of Sessional Lecturer II and Sessional Lecturer III in accordance with Article 14:12.

Description of duties:
Preparation and delivery of course content (online synchronous); development, administration and marking of assignments, tests and exams; calculation and submission of grades; holding regular office hours; supervising TAs assigned to the course (if any).
