- Global objective of the position
Under the line management of the Multi Task Team (MTT) Team Leader (TL) the Searcher is part of the team conducing survey, clearance (conventional and search) and EOD/IEDD activities in the Governorate of Kirkuk or any other where potentially can be deployed. The MTT component of the project involves the location, removal and destruction of Explosive Remnants of War (ERW) and Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), surveying Suspected and Confirmed Hazardous Areas (SHA/CHA) and delivering emergency Risk Education (RE) safety briefings to persons at risk on the dangers of ERW and IEDs who are living, traveling or working close to the hazardous areas. The operators may be tasked to assist the project in other ways from time to time.
- Responsibilities and task description
- Clearance operations
- Work as a part of an integrated Clearance Team, carrying out the identification, neutralizing, destruction and removal of ERW and IEDs as per SOPs as well as survey operations.
- As directed by the Team Leader and SOPs, assist in location and marking of hazardous areas.
- Be responsible for safe operational drills in accordance with the HI Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Check all equipment priors to use as laid down in SOPs.
- Be directly responsible and accountable for the personal equipment issued. Ensure that equipment is accounted for, secure and in good working order in accordance with logistical procedures.
- Ensure the correct use of protective equipment as laid down in SOPs.
- Ensure allocated metal detector/locator is well maintained and serviceable at all times. Be alert for malfunctions and defects and report these to the Team Leader.
- Attend training courses and periodical refresher training as directed.
- Take part in regular internal and external Quality Assessments.
- Be prepared to be utilised as a controller in the Control Room; maintaining and recording communication with deployed teams; act as the central point of contact in the event of an emergency in accordance with Clearance emergency procedures, as and when required.
- Assist the TL, Supervisor, TFM or Chief of Operations in the preparation of controlled demolitions as per SOPs.
- General Duties and other tasks

- Demonstrate willingness to improve own knowledge and skills by participating actively in any training sessions and capacity building activities.
- Respect each team member’s positions, work, and specialty.
- Adapt to special situations or demands from supervisor.
- Any other tasked as directed by the Team Leader, TFM or Chief of Operations
- Driving to and from workplace and other locations could be requested from time to time.
- Work Conditions
- Work schedule
The normal working schedule is as follows:
- Sunday until Thursday, from 08:00 to 16:30.
- Teams shall operate a minimum of 6 hours on site, excluding movement from the base to the site.
Working hours are suitable to be changed depending on the season and environmental conditions. In summer time, teams will normally operate starting at 05:00.
The employee could be exceptionally requested to work on Friday or Saturday. In that case a day off would be planned between Sunday and Thursday during the previous or following week.
Note that working time can go up to 48 hours per week if it is required by the volume of activities and requested by the supervisor or Chief of Operations. In that case the overtime will be considered as recovery time to be planned by the supervisor in the following days.

Qualifications & Preferred Skills
- Languages
- Fluency in local language (speaking, reading and writing) is required.
- Working knowledge of English (intermediate in speaking, reading and writing) is an advantage.
- Education & experience
- Minimum of 2 years professional experience, preferably in a similar role.
- Previous experience with international or local NGO
- Previous work in Mine Action – Risk Education, EOD Experience in Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) or Mine Action Operations is desired.
- Skills
- Able to handle confidential and sensitive information.
- Excellent organizational skills.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Have a good base knowledge of Risk Education, EOD or demining.
- Be able to work in a safe manner and as per SOPs.
- Able to work as part of a team.
- Strong interpersonal and intercultural skills.
- A demonstrated commitment to high professional ethical standards and humanitarian values.
- Clean Driving Licence desirable (Handicap International will require those undertaking driving responsibilities to undertake an internal practical test).
