Position: Cultural Orientation Teacher

Reports to: Family Education Coordinator

Position term: September 2021- ongoing

Schedule: 10-15 hours per week.

Please note that this is an unpaid position.

BACKGROUND:
Founded in 1933, the International Rescue Committee is a leading, non-sectarian, non-profit organization providing emergency relief, protection, rehabilitation assistance, resettlement services, and advocacy for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict. Domestically, our 27 offices across the U.S. ensure new arrivals have food, shelter, and clothing, and work with refugees to help them gain self-sufficiency.

The IRC New York Resettlement office’s Family Education program provides free classes and educational services to our adult clients. These individuals are individuals who fled war, persecution, and civil conflict, seeking peace and better futures. They have diverse cultural and educational backgrounds. Moreover, they are highly adaptable, usually multilingual, and eager to start rebuilding their lives in America.

Cultural Orientation is an intensive social adjustment course for all newly arrived refugees which focuses on essential information for new Americans through content-based instruction. The class aims to familiarize students with their new environment and prepare them for the daily challenges of living as part of the New York City community.

SCOPE OF WORK:
Teacher will support timely coordination and scheduling of classes in collaboration with colleagues, assist with program and date management, and teach as needed using IRC’s established curriculum.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Coordinate scheduling orientation dates, times and logistics

Teach cultural orientation workshops (2 hours each) using IRC’s curriculum and materials

Assess students at the end of workshop

Attend training and regular meetings with the program Coordinator

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
The Cultural Orientation teacher will get hands-on experience working with refugee populations soon after they arrive in the US

Learn about the refugee resettlement process in NY

Qualifications

REQUIREMENTS:
Experience teaching adult English language learners (ELLs)

Bachelor’s degree in education or ESL Certification highly desirable

Knowledge of student-centered teaching strategies and adult learning principles

Comfort working with refugees and immigrants from a variety of backgrounds, including those with limited formal education and/or literacy skills

Ability to adapt to changing situations, working in a fast-paced environment

Ability to work both independently and as part of a team

Responsible, dependable, and dedicated

Second language (Spanish, French, Arabic, Dari or Pashto) required
