Research Specialist II, Center for Global Health Science and Security – Georgetown University
Georgetown University’s Center for Global Health Science and Security conducts original research to help decision-makers worldwide build sustainable capacities to prevent, detect, and respond to public health emergencies. We explore the growing demands on the world’s public health infrastructure, from policies intended to contain transnational disease threats to the economic benefits of promoting health in the world’s poorest nations and the changing roles for health in domestic and international security and diplomacy.
Reporting to the PI/Assistant Professor, and collaborating among multi-disciplinary team members based in multiple partner institutions, the Research Specialist II has duties that includes but are not limited to:
Research Activities
Analyzes the impact of national and global policies, procedures, and practices in health systems strengthening (particular focus on laboratory and surveillance systems) to identify lessons learned, best practices, gaps, and opportunities for capacity building.
Develops, adapts, and applies methodologies to collect and analyze data on a variety of topics, including but not limited to, national capabilities for compliance with international health frameworks, including the International Health Regulations and Global Health Security Agenda.
Collects and organizes research data for sponsors, institutional, and cooperative studies.
Produces analytical reports, gap assessments and case studies.
Assists in developing and maintaining interactive platforms for remote engagement and resource sharing.
Contributes to the drafting and finalization of manuscripts for peer reviewed publication.
Administrative Support
Supports the project team to plan, design, and develop case studies, scenarios, and exercise and training materials to strengthen preparedness for biological events based on gap analyses, regional/global standards, and sponsor/partner end -state objectives.
Assists in developing and managing project and training program plans.
Manages online systems and websites for interactive remote engagement with various international stakeholders.
Communicates with international partners on project timelines and deliverables.
Prepares for and supports planning meetings and travel with project stakeholders for sponsored research, training, and exercise engagements.
Assists with simulation exercises and workshops, including in international settings.
Contributes to the drafting and finalization of quarterly project reports, after-action, and analytical reports for project sponsors and partners.
Qualifications
Master’s degree in the biological sciences or related field
0-2 years of work experience in a relevant field OR 0-2 years applied research experience
Knowledge of current concepts in global health security, data management, biological threat agents and implementation science policies and practices
Flexibility and capacity to respond to rapidly evolving needs for the planning, development, and implementation of research projects and training events
Willingness and ability to contribute to both project funded reports and peer reviewed publications
Ability to work independently and in collaboration with a team
Ability to prioritize, focus and achieve results in a fast-paced and complex environment
Ability to work with colleagues and partners of diverse backgrounds and attention to detail
Advanced organizational, interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
Availability and willingness to travel international travel when restrictions have been lifted
Preferred qualifications
Experience in conducting policy analysis related to health systems, international health regulations, infectious diseases, and/or implementation science
Experience in data collection and analysis related to laboratory systems, surveillance systems and infectious diseases
Experience in data analysis and visualization tools
Knowledge of information management systems and platforms
Strong information technology/computer skills
Foreign language proficiency (Arabic)
