Community Service Officer

The Position

Community Service Officers provide prisoner transport and escort to and from court and correctional facilities and provide general security throughout the court sessions. This position will also perform parking enforcement duties as well as a wide variety of police-related operational support. Responsibilities

Depending upon assignment, the incumbent may perform a combination of some or all the following duties:

Coordinate transfer and transport of prisoners between the court and correctional facilities according to established procedures.

Maintain custody of prisoners while in the presence of city employees, maintain city’s prisoner holding area.

Ensure court security by escorting and remaining with restrained prisoners in the courtroom.

Take individuals into custody when ordered by Judge on outstanding warrants.

Develop and coordinate security plans in conjunction with court and police personnel.

Operate the video arraignment system in the jail.

Provide information and direction to defendants and public, verify documents such as insurance and registration for effective dates, and inspect vehicles to confirm corrective action has been taken.

Impound abandoned vehicles after due process. Prepare and file police reports on impounded vehicles.

Perform parking enforcement duties according to established procedures, laws and codes.

Enforce codes relating to abandoned vehicles.

Testify in court for work-related activities.

Perform duties outlined in the Community Service Officer classification and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

AN IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE:
Experience with prisoner transport safety, security, rules and regulations.

Hands on experience with de-escalation techniques and/or mental health training.

Knowledge and experience with parking enforcement and related codes.

A knowledge of related laws, statutes, regulations, ordinances and procedures.

Comfort with operating assigned equipment including radio, handgun, handcuffs and other restraints skillfully and safely in conformance with applicable laws and regulations.

Experience with fingerprinting.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
High School Diploma or GED.

Experience or training in a law enforcement field

Or an equivalent combination of education and experience enabling the incumbent to perform the essential functions of the position.

Valid driver’s license and the ability to meet the city’s driving standards.

Must be 21 years of age or older.

Ability to receive a 70% or higher score on the Department’s entry level Corrections/Police Officer written exam.

Upon appointment, recruit Community Service Officers will be required to successfully complete the Department of Public Safety and Training (DPSST) Basic Corrections Academy (6 weeks) within 18 months of hire.

Ability to become CJIS certified. Pre-employment fingerprints need to be completed and cleared prior to start date. Testing process occurs within 30 days of hire.

Ability to pass un-timed physical agility test.

Ability to pass reference checks, extensive background check, physical and drug screen.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Bilingual Competency in English and any of the following: Spanish or Arabic or Korean or Vietnamese or Chinese or Russian or Japanese, including speaking, reading and writing.

Compensation

Starting Wage: $25.64 – $34.35

Starting wage will be determined depending on relevant work experience as outlined in the Equal Pay Act. New hires who meet minimum requirements will start at step one. Higher steps may be offered to those who have additional years of directly related experience to the position.
