General Expectations of All Staff:
A. Be familiar with and abide by Concordia Language Villages’ Personnel Policies.
B. Promote the health, safety, and well-being of all staff members and participants.
C. Develop and maintain collegial relationships among all staff, including support staff, for a productive working atmosphere at the Village that promotes the mission of the Language Villages.
D. Speak the target language with participants and staff members as much as possible.
LEAD TEACHER (teaching licensure highly preferred):
- Develop and implement a linguistically and culturally appropriate learner-centered program for the Village, working in consultation with the Language Community and group director.
- Hire, orient and supervise Language Teacher(s) and Cultural Assistant(s).
- Implement the educational curriculum.
- Arrange for pre-session planning: communications for registrants, resources order texts, supplies, and assessments, and placement tools.
- Coordinate and administer program: schedule classes and activities, handle correspondence and administer evaluations.
- Supervise the placement of credit villagers at appropriate levels.
- Complete Language Teacher responsibilities, as needed.
- Maintain the educational program and schedule, incorporating the optimum level of language and cultural involvement within the philosophy of Concordia Language Villages. Continue to enhance and assess the efficacy of program delivery.
- Conduct regular staff meetings for purposes of communication, logistical planning and educational improvement of the program.
- Provide effective guidance and leadership to staff while in program and conduct a meaningful review of staff members’ contribution to the program at the end of each program.
- Prepare a final report.
- For credit program only: Ensure each villager has achieved a minimum of 90 hours for semester or 180 hours for full year of instruction and has complied with Cognia guidelines (accrediting body for the CLV high school credit sessions) on program quality and improvement.
- For credit program only: Ensure that all proper documentation of student performance is collected and filed with the Concordia Language Villages office within three days of the credit session end date.
LANGUAGE TEACHER (teaching licensure highly preferred):
- Under the direction of the Lead Teacher, plan, teach and assess language classes and activities on line.
- Maintain communication with Lead Teacher on the progress of all villagers in the class.
- Assist with other aspects of Village life, including cultural presentations and activity periods.
- Complete other tasks as assigned by Lead Teacher
- For credit program only: Maintain accurate grade records, complete mid-session progress reports and final evaluations.
CULTURAL ASSISTANT:
- Participate in all aspects of Village life, including activity classes, study halls (credit program), song times, evening programs, cultural presentations and staff meetings. Lead or assist as directed.
- Lead games, Cabin Council and other activities as directed.
- Complete other tasks as assigned by the Lead Teacher.
Minimum Qualifications
LEAD TEACHER:
- Bachelor’s degree (B.A., B.S.) or international equivalent
- Previous experience with Concordia Language Villages or other experiential learning
- Conversational and written proficiency in the target language
- Skills in teaching the target language & culture
- Work experience with high school students
- Strong personnel and program management skills
- Computer skills
- Ability to communicate effectively with parents and schools
- Teaching licensure, highly preferred
- Experience as a teacher in the U.S. school system, preferred
LANGUAGE TEACHER:
- Bachelor’s degree (B.A., B.S.) or international equivalent
- Intermediate or higher proficiency in the Village language, both conversational and written
- Experience teaching the target language and culture
- Experience working with adolescents 14-18 years of age
- Teaching licensure, highly preferred
- Experience as a teacher in the United States school system, preferred
- Previous experience with Concordia Language Villages or other experiential learning, preferred
CULTURAL ASSISTANT:
- Completion of of at least one year in college/university/post-secondary school, at fully enrolled status
- Completion of intermediate level or higher of language study (typically, second or third-year coursework at the university level)
- Experience working with children and adolescents
- Skills in target culture (i.e., music, arts, sports related to the Village culture)
- Previous experience with Concordia Language Villages or other experiential learning, preferred
