SWEDO is a Swedish non-profit, non-political, non-religious development aid organization that was founded in 1991 in Stockholm, Sweden. Having continuously operated in the Kurdistan Region ever since, SWEDO’s main priorities of work are construction and infrastructure activities, refugee and IDP initiatives, health, water, sanitation and hygiene, and capacity building.

 

Basra Governorate is at the intersection of overlapping drivers of crisis such as water scarcity, climate change, neglected infrastructures and raising unemployment. The impact of such drivers of crisis is exacerbated by more frequent drought, COVID19 and loss of jobs due to the drop in oil prices, resulting in food insecurity, malnutrition, water-induced displacement and further degradation of the community livelihoods and ecosystem resources

 

 

Key project activities and assets

 

  • Rehabilitated and improved the primary and secondary water canals serving the beneficiaries;
  • Created vegetable gardens for the vulnerable households, with selected salinity-resistant vegetables, with the provision of agricultural tools;
  • Provided small livestock units to 750 beneficiaries;
  • 750 households adopt new techniques for water saving and sustainable farming through three training activities and mentoring from joint team SWEDO-Department of Water and Irrigation;
  • 750 households (approx. 395 men and 355 women) receive training to strengthen food security and nutrition by enabling the link between rural livelihoods and urban economy, livestock and vegetable food products commercialization, storage and post-harvest chain, diversification strategies and nutrition capacity building.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assessment of the target areas for the livelihood, small livestock and water canals intervention in order to provide a detailed assessment of the functionality of irrigation canals;
  • Provide technical expertise on intervention related to agricultural assets, especially water, in the project area;
  • Provide technical advisory to the Project Manager and the SWEDO Country office for Iraq on the procurement for goods and services related to the design and implementation of the program;
  • Write technical requirements and specifications, evaluating technical offers and advising on amendments and technical needs;
  • Detailing the list of technical works and cleaning to be operated on the water canals;
  • Identify needs for the rehabilitation and/or deployment of drip water irrigation systems;
  • Assist in the procurement and delivery of crops production and protection and small livestock;
  • Organize technical training on conservation agriculture;
  • Assist in the procurement of agricultural inputs;
  • Participate to survey activities to assess access constraints to livelihoods.

Qualifications & Preferred Skills

  • Bachelor degree in agriculture, water resources or livelihood, MA is preferred;
  • At least 5 years of professional experience in in agriculture, livelihoods and irrigation systems, expert knowledge of cropping systems in Iraq;
  • Fluency in Arabic and English Languages;
  • Knowledge and familiarity with datasets developed by the humanitarian community in Iraq;
  • Good knowledge of land cover and land use assessment;
  • Knowledge of technical surveys for livelihood assessment;
  • Knowledge of technical surveys for livelihood assessment.
