Background:
SWEDO is a Swedish non-profit, non-political, non-religious humanitarian aid organization founded in 1991 in Stockholm, Sweden, which has been registered and licensed under the number of (675-F) in Kurdistan region of Iraq. SWEDO provides humanitarian aid to Internally Displaced Persons, Refugees, and host communities in Iraq, through health & hygiene, education, emergency response and protection projects.
Responsibilities & Duties:
- Assist persons of concern to access and enjoy their rights in light of international standards and according to relevant bodies of law.
- Willingness to work primarily in the field as part of a mobile legal team, traveling to various locations within Erbil governorate on a daily basis, and to other governorates throughout Iraq, if it is required
- Provide accurate and neutral legal counseling to IDPs on a range of legal issues and concerns, particularly related to missing documentation.
- Advocate with local authorities to ensure that the rights of IDPs are upheld and protected.
- Enhance knowledge of relevant legal and protection issues; particularly related to changes in Residency issues, Security Authorities policy and any other changes related to legal procedures affecting IDPs.
- Follow up on detention cases where required, and advocate for the basic rights of IDPs to be respected.
- Representing IDPs in front of courts and governmental facilities, also in cases related to Sexual and Gender-Based Violence, including domestic violence.
- Promote knowledge and awareness of IDPs’ legal rights; including registration procedures, birth documentation and access to justice.
- Input beneficiary details into Legal database/ KoBo with adherence to data protection protocols and focus on ensuring accuracy of data
- Support the data analysis of legal case data in a safe and ethical manner
- Produce weekly and/or monthly reports and support the Team Leader in submitting internal reports as per schedule.
- Conducting FGDs and legal awareness sessions to IDPs about different legal topics, according to their needs.
- Develop and maintain effective working relationship with relevant stakeholders including partner agencies, community leaders and service providers
- Uphold SWEDO and UNHCR’s code of conduct, and ensure that all persons of concern are treated with dignity and respect, in accordance with humanitarian principles and human rights standards.
- Attend Legal Task Force, Legal Coordination, camp Coordination and similar meetings as requested by supervisor
- Participate in training and coaching as required by management
- Any other duties relating to the nature of the job as directed by the Supervisors.

Qualifications & Preferred Skills
- Bachelor Degree in Law;
- At least two years’ work experience in the same position or relevant field;
- Fluency in Kurdish & Arabic languages and English is a plus;
- Member of the KRI/ Iraqi Lawyer’s Bar Association;
- Willingness to work in all areas of the Mosul and Erbil Governorates; travel long distances and work in adverse weather conditions;
- Legal qualification and ability to practice law within the Mosul and Erbil Governorates;
- Must work well within ethnically diverse teams, and work cooperatively within teams
