Background

Under the leadership of UN Women, the updated IASC Gender Handbook for Humanitarian Action was developed by the IASC Gender Reference Group in 2017. An accompanying four-day, interactive, face-to-face training was subsequently developed to introduce the concepts and contents of the Handbook to humanitarian practitioners. Since 2018, UN Women has delivered this four-day training to UN Women personnel, as well as to humanitarian partners from UN agencies, INGOs, local NGOs, and Government Ministries in a number of countries responding to humanitarian needs.

Against the backdrop of COVID19 and the mobility restrictions in place in major humanitarian contexts, there is a need to adapt the face-to-face training to a virtual model.

The purpose of the virtual training:
To strengthen the knowledge and skills of humanitarian actors in integrating gender into humanitarian planning and programming:

Learning concepts, tools, practices from the IASC Gender Handbook for Humanitarian Action

Practical application of concepts, tools and practices using case studies, simulations, activities, and problem solving

Adapting concepts, tools and practices to the local context and sectors

Sharing expertise, experiences and ideas

How to use and get the most out of the IASC Gender Handbook for Humanitarian Action.

The training is an adaptation of the existing Gender in Humanitarian Action face to face training course previously developed by UN Women on behalf of the IASC. Both the face to face and this new, online version are intended to provide an introduction on how to integrate gender across all phases of the Humanitarian Programme Cycle (HPC), as set out in the IASC’s Gender in Humanitarian Action Handbook. Namely, assessment and analysis, programme design, resource mobilization, implementation and M&E.

The target audience continues to be front-line actors across sectors/clusters and organizations who provide humanitarian response and who are non-gender specialists.

Trainers and Support: Like the previous face-to-face training, the virtual GiHA training will be delivered by a team of two trainers. An Assistant Facilitator is required to work with the Lead Trainer in the delivery of the pilot run of this newly developed virtual training.

UN Women’s Training Center will provide the online platforms for the trainings, as well as technical support to upload the content to the online platform.
