Position Summary
PIRE-California is seeking a Project Coordinator on an intervention study to reduce and prevent use of commercial tobacco products by Arab Americans who are medically underserved in the East Bay region of Northern California. The Project Coordinator will work closely with the Study Director and Community Advisory Board to carry out activities that support the scientific goals of the study and meet the community “where they’re at” in terms of readiness to change tobacco use practices. The study includes: (1) a pilot Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment program for Arab American tobacco product users, and (2) a Community Women’s Group which will design and implement community-based activities and outreach in support of smokefree homes and other prevention goals.
This position is a 60% FTE and therefore benefits eligible. The position is funded by a grant which ends May 31, 2022.

Job Requirements

  • Bilingual, Native Arabic speaker (must be able to proficiently read and write in Arabic)
  • Prior experience in health education, public health, behavioral health, and/or community outreach and organizing
  • Preferred experience in tobacco treatment and prevention
  • Able to facilitate meetings on web-based platforms and, conditions permitting, in person in East Bay Area locations
  • Able to work respectfully and compassionately with adult women and men on behavioral health issues
  • Able to work independently and as part of a community and scientific research team
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Demonstrated excellent management and coordination skills
  • Experience in dealing with the public, including coordinating public presentations and group facilitation
  • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends

Some Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide coaching on tobacco cessation to participants in the Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment program, with two follow-ups; record data
  • Co-facilitate the Arab American Community Women’s Group; provide support to the activities designed by the group; record meeting minutes in English
  • Coordinate activities with project Community Advisory Board and consultants
  • Contribute to reports to community and scientific stakeholder groups
  • Supervise project research assistant
