TERMS OF REFERENCE: Business Development Trainer for IMDAD program, Iraq.
Introduction
Malteser International (MI) the worldwide relief agency of the Order of Malta for humanitarian aid, works in more than 25 countries in Africa, Asia and the Americas for people in need, regardless of their religion, origin or political affiliation. Its mission is to provide emergency relief as well as to implement rehabilitation measures and to facilitate the link between emergency relief and sustainable development. Christian values and the humanitarian principles of impartiality and independence form the basis of its work in the following areas: Relief, Reconstruction & Rehabilitation; Health & Nutrition; Water, Sanitation & Hygiene (WASH); Livelihood & Social Programs and Disaster Risk Reduction.
Malteser International is working in Iraq since 2014 and recently started the implementation of a new program in Ninawa funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). The program is called Intervention for More Durable Assistance and Development (IMDAD) and aims to build economic recovery, social cohesion and increase access to quality health care and rehabilitative services, with a focus on the most vulnerable among the population in Sinjar, Talafar, Tilkief and Hamdaniya.
This intervention signals a transition to sustainable livelihoods through more in-depth analysis of market dynamics, needs, skills development, fostering entrepreneurship, employment, value added approaches to production and marketing, and testing pilot agricultural activities. As such it is important to ensure a smooth implementation, carefully considering the context, target group specificities, market situation, access, and sustainability.
Objectives
Under direct supervision of Program Coordinator and in close coordination with IMDAD Program Team, MI is seeking an individual to:
- Train 20 beneficiaries on tailored business development topics, focusing on advanced level i.e. presentation skills, managing and cultivating client relationships, building reputation and developing business plan.
- Support IMDAD program team on managing SME grants in line with donor and MI regulations.
- Provide coaching and mentoring sessions to targeted beneficiaries
The assignment will focus on Telafar (Markaz Telafar) in Ninewa Governorate.
Scope of Work, including Duties and Responsibilities
Under the direct supervision of the Program Coordinator and in close coordination with the IMDAD Program team, it is expected that the Business Development Trainer will work on:
- In consultation with IMDAD Program team, you will develop a Business Training Curriculum, for five days (five hours per day) focusing on business skills and planning. Clear methodology and proposed tools will need to be included. The training should adopt a participatory and interactive approach.
- Develop and conduct before the beginning of the training a test to assess trainees’ business knowledge; the same test will be re-administered at the end of the training.
- Record trainees’ participation during the training and submit a full training report (in English) upon completion of the course. The report structure will be agreed upon between MI and the post-holder.
- Support beneficiaries to develop a Business Plan (which includes a detailed list of quantity and cost for items – raw materials, tools – and facilities necessary to start and run the business).
- Submit full detailed business plan for each beneficiary including a clear overview of what is needed with specific amounts for each grant
- With IMDAD program team, accompany beneficiaries when purchasing identified items under prior set BOQs based on work plan.
- Business trainer to conduct coaching and/or mentoring visits for targeted beneficiaries i.e. after purchasing SMEs start up goods with minimum of 2 visits per beneficiary.
- The training should be delivered in a local language
- Arrange his/her trips to the assigned targeted areas for training.

It is envisaged that this consultancy will start NOV 15, 2021 and finish by Jan 15, 2022.
** During the assignment period of two months, a maximum of 20 working days is expected.
Qualifications & Preferred Skills
- Bachelor’s degree, preferably in business management/marketing or related field
- Past experience in working with the livelihood sector
- Experience in livelihoods programs – specifically training and curriculum development for youth, women and adults.
- Fluency in Local language.
- Working knowledge of English and ability to write reports in English is preferable.
- Knowledge of the IDPs and profile in Ninawa.
- Excellent coordination skills
- Ability to engage in personal learning and development.
- Practice in community development
- Strategic, creative and innovative thinking.
- Ability to maintain performance expectations in diverse cultural contexts, stressful environments, and physical hardship conditions.
- Arabic and English languages are required; Turkmen desirable.
- At least 1 year business training experience, preferably with experience working with low-literacy populations
