Job Description

The New York State Professional Pathways for High-Skilled Immigrants program will respond to the COVID-19 pandemic by assisting New York’s low-income immigrant population to fully utilize their potential in pursuing their career goals. This program will allow low-income immigrants in New York State who received higher education abroad to pursue employment that matches their previous education and experience. The IRC in NY will be supporting this program by providing low-income immigrants living in Manhattan, Bronx, and Staten Island with career development services.

Under the supervision of the IRC’s Career Development Coordinator and the Professional Pathways Lead Agency, the Career Development Specialist will provide comprehensive career development training and career exploration services to clients to help them advance in the workplace. The Career Development Specialist will be working directly in developing and implementing career pathways services and assisting clients in accessing training resources, as well as professional development and employment opportunities in their sector. This role will also be responsible for program outreach and enrollment; curriculum development; facilitation of bridge training; development of community and employment partners; career coaching and job placement.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Manage a caseload of 30 high-skilled immigrants pursuing career development opportunities
  • Conduct intake and pre-enrollment assessments with clients, create career development service plan detailing a client’s career goals and a step-by-step plan for its achievement, and provide ongoing career coaching
  • Provide one-on-one coaching to help clients pursue career opportunities. Coaching will include: developing and preparing client resumes, cover letters, job applications, and interviews; connect clients with professional development and job opportunities; connect clients with training opportunities in industry of experience; and other individualized support as needed by each client.
  • Develop and refine advanced work readiness curriculum in collaboration with agency staff
  • Develop and instruct bridge programming as necessary for client success in advanced training programs
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date case files documenting client goals, activities, and services
  • Document services provided and client outcomes in relevant case management databases
  • Develop and locate appropriate employment opportunities for clients
  • Provide financial coaching and education services to program participants
  • Identify and engage local agencies for participant referrals and maintain relationship with training partner to assess progress of training participants
  • Conduct primary outreach for client enrollment into Career Development programing
  • Work closely with IRC employment specialists, case managers and financial education staff members to integrate services for program participants
  • Support the Coordinator and EE Manager in tracking quantifiable measurements to assess project effectiveness
  • Other related duties as assigned

Job Requirements:
Work Experience:

  • At least two years of related professional experience in workforce development
  • Experience in developing curriculum and instructing coursework for English Language Learners
  • Experience in a non-profit setting and prior experience working in employment services a plus
  • Experience working in a diverse, and non-traditional setting with diverse client base
  • Knowledge of healthcare and/or healthcare administration preferred.

Demonstrated Skills and Competencies:

  • Self- starter with excellent problem-solving skills combined with the proven ability to multi-task, prioritize duties, and manage time effectively.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and an overall ability to be clear and concise in all communications
  • Exceptional organizational skills with proven attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated success working and communicating effectively in a multi-cultural environment.
  • Proven ability to contribute both independently and as a key team member.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Ability to travel regularly throughout New York City

Language Skills:

  • Fluent in English, both spoken and written; bilingual ability required, preferably in Spanish, French, Arabic, Dari/Farsi and/or Pashto.

  • Ability to work both independently and in a dynamic, cross-functional team structure
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with stakeholders at all levels
  • Ability to manage and work through change in a proactive and positive manner.

Working Environment: Standard office work environment, along with some field work, including local travel to employers, client homes and other community-based partners.
