ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT
The Communication/PI Assistant will report to the Communication/PI Officer and will have regular contacts within the office/unit involving exchange of information. S/he will also have limited external contacts on routine matters.
FUNCTIONAL STATEMENT
Accountability
– UNHCR receives effective and efficient clerical support for communication and Public Information in the Country/Unit.
Responsibility
– Collect press-cuttings of articles in national, regional, international and periodicals that pertain to refugee related issues and to the work of the office.
– Compile and maintain the mailing list for press releases, information bulletins, etc and ensure timely despatch of information to media and other interested parties.
– Classify and maintain adequate stock of PI materials and promote sale of merchandise where appropriate.
– Maintain up-to-date the catalogue of PI material and types monthly report regarding sales and stocks for submission to PI at Headquarters in accordance with established guidelines.
– Provide clerical assistance with regard to PI events such as poster campaigns, exhibitions, and public awareness raising events.
– Respond to routine telephone and written enquiries from a variety of sources such as the media, the public, NGOs and government officials etc.
– Maintain PI files up-to-date.
– Perform other duties as required.
Authority
– Have access to UNHCR’s communication / PI systems.
ESSENTIAL MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
– 1 year relevant experience with High School Diploma; or Bachelor or equivalent or higher in Business Administration, Journalism, Social Science or related field.
– Communication and computer skills.
– Excellent drafting skills as well as translation and interpreting skills.
– Fluency in English and working knowledge of another relevant UN language or local language
(In offices where the working language is not English, excellent knowledge of UN working language of duty station and working knowledge of English.)
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS & COMPETENCIES
– Completion of UNHCR Learning Programmes or specific training relevant to functions of position.
– Knowledge of another UN language is an asset.

REMUNERATION
A competitive compensation and benefits package is offered. The monthly net salary is between TRY 7,578 and TRY 9,520 depending on relevant experience, dependency status and language proficiency. ======================================================================================================== I. Nature of the Position
As part of the Public Information Unit, the incumbent is expected to support the unit with regard to monitoring the media, translate relevant documents and communicate with other units for coordination.
This entails regularly monitoring the developments in media and the country to provide relevant information to his/her supervisor.
The Communications Assistant will also follow up the activities and events of the office to support the PI Unit with drafting stories and social media posts.
In close coordination with respective functional units and field offices, the Communications Assistant will assist the office with organising public events.
II. Interaction with Persons of Concern or External Stakeholders
As part of the Public Information Unit, the incumbent is expected to maintain regular interaction with the field offices, relevant units and partner NGOs. He/She will be in contact with the PoCs benefiting from UNHCR’s services for drafting human stories.
III. Reporting and Managerial Expectations
Reporting to the Communications Officer, the incumbent will be part of the Public Information Unit of UNHCR Turkey. The incumbent is expected to be in constant contact with the other unit members to assist when needed.
IV. Additional Languages, Skills and Qualifications
Excellent drafting, editing, translating, interpreting, proofreading, communication skills and knowledge of refugee-related issues is essential. Previous experience in the Public Information and External Relations fields would be an asset. Graduation from International Relations or Communications Departments would be an asset.
