Position Summary
The primary purpose of the Digital Literacy Specialist is to equip vulnerable newcomers with basic digital/technical skills and access to hardware required to participate in remote services and stay connected during Covid?19 and beyond. The Digital Literacy Specialist will assess client needs and adapt existing digital literacy training resources designed for English learners to meet the needs of KEYS clients and for a remote delivery context. They will meet with participants individually or in small groups to provide a basic introduction and then deliver group sessions online. They will deliver training using plain language in a second language or with interpretation (i.e. to Arabic, Somali, Tigrinya, Swahili, Dari, or other) for individuals with limited knowledge of the English language.
The Digital Literacy Specialist will also support the implementation and use of remote service tools with staff and KEYS participants to facilitate improved connection/communication between staff and participants with digital literacy barriers without the need for in?person contact. They will provide IT support to immigrant services staff to facilitate effective online and remote service delivery.
Position responsibilities may change according to participant or program needs and funding.
Competencies Required
Ability to teach beginner computer skills to individuals with entry?level English language skills, no knowledge of computers and/or without a strong educational background
Ability to troubleshoot technical problems
Understand the challenges facing refugees and newcomers; knowledge of issues related to resettlement
Capable of communicating effectively with individuals learning English as a Second Language and working effectively with an interpreter
Knowledge of principles of Adult Learning
Demonstrate an ability to work with individuals experiencing discrimination, racism and culture shock
Ability to work with victims of war and trauma
Ability to counsel clients in a supportive, solution?focused manner
Patience, flexibility and ability to multitask
Must treat all individuals with equal respect and interact in a tactful, supportive, professional manner while maintaining professional boundaries
Comfort working autonomously in off?site locations and promoting KEYS programs and services in those communities
Flexibility, creativity and effectiveness in working collaboratively in a multicultural team
Use discretion to deal effectively with sensitive issues; respond positively to challenges
Commitment to KEYS vision, mission and objectives
Qualifications
Post?secondary education in a relevant field or combination of education and relevant work experience
Minimum of two years’ experience in counselling, teaching, coaching or a related field
Proven technical knowledge & skills
Previous experience working with immigrants & refugees would be considered an asset
Proficiency in English. Proficiency in Arabic, Somali, Dari, Tigrinya, Swahili, or another
language would be considered a definite asset.
Work Environment (Equipment, Demands and Hazards)
Office setting in Kingston with frequent travel to off?site locations within the KEYS catchment area
Professional appearance is required; casual business attire
35 hours per week with occasional early morning or evening activities
Use of office equipment required: cell phone, photocopier, fax, computers, software specific to programs
