Consultancy service for Localization of thematic kits
‘Making the Ideas Box a Space for Girls and Women’
from FRENCH to ARABIC
Context
Since 2007, Bibliothèques Sans Frontières has been working to bring knowledge and information to those who are most in need. Libraries are simultaneously excellent places for personal growth and collective development. However, they are too often absent where they could have the most impact.
Because lack of access to information is an important driver of inequality in today’s world, BSF works in 25 languages, in 50 countries across the globe, and have curated more than 35,000 sources of knowledge and information.
To access this information, BSF created the Ideas Box: a mobile “pop up” multimedia center and learning hub that provides educational and cultural resources to communities in need, including refugees and displaced persons in camps around the globe, and underserved communities.
Despite all these projects, girls and women are underrepresented in the Ideas Box audience, with only 29% of visitors. And when they come to the Ideas Box, they are often locked into stereotypical uses: accompanying their children, consulting information books alone, or asking about services their family can access. They rarely participate in the training workshops organized in the Ideas Box, and too often because social, psychological and symbolic barriers prevent them from doing so.
The challenge is immense when it comes to ensuring that girls and women have the same opportunities for development and autonomy as boys and men. Yet, we see on a daily basis how women and girls are the most exposed in crisis situations and in the face of exclusion. It is in this context that we are launching, alongside the Chanel Foundation, Ideas Box for Women, an initiative within the Ideas Box program that will aim to develop and structure a set of activities and services dedicated to empowering and strengthening girls and women within the program.
An initial diagnostic conducted on a sample of 30 projects identified the priority themes for girls and women in the Ideas Box programs currently deployed. These themes are :
Making the Ideas Box a Space for Girls and Women
Women’s, Maternal and Child Health
Financial autonomy and entrepreneurship
Leadership and Influence Strategy
Gender-based violence
- A kit includes:
A selection of digital content (i.e. 10 to 20 digital contents), targeting a given pedagogical objective, for a given audience, in a given language,
A recommendation of physical content related to the theme,
An online training for facilitators with the associated content,
The structure of the in-person training for the facilitators for the appropriation of the kit to get used and to raise their awareness,
A number of activity sheets allowing facilitators to propose dedicated activities on the targeted theme, within the Ideas Box.
Target of the mission
Kits have been developed in one language for one field. The aim of the translation project is to translate and adapt culturally speaking each kit and its content to a country where BSF intervenes. This is what we call localization. This is particularly important when we speak about such themes.
Kits localized in English will be targeted for Ideas Box in Jordan.
