The Communications Coordinator will monitor news and track the agency’s news coverage as we raise Save the Children’s profile among key audiences in the United States. In this role, you will provide timely, media-savvy support and data-driven insights to senior staff. You will also build media lists, research media trends, help pitch the agency’s programmatic work and expertise to media, and assist the communications team to uncover new and innovative ways to promote our work.
What You’ll Be Doing (Essential Duties, Responsibilities and impact)
News Monitoring and Reporting – 60%
Utilize monitoring tools to track Save the Children brand mentions, power of voice and share of voice in news media and maintain related online tools and toolkits.
Work with communications manager to create media coverage reports and monthly insights reports for key internal stakeholders.
Media Operations and Research – 30%
Build media lists for key media moments and rapid onset emergencies.
Research reporters for proactive media outreach, media trends, and thought leadership opportunities.
Administrative assistance planning events, tracking budget, and other duties as assigned.
Media Relations – 10%
Assist the communications team to generate earned media through pitching journalists on global moments and breaking news stories, as well as responding to press inquiries.
Serve as weekend media on call for breaking news and urgent media queries approximately once every 8 weeks.
Required Qualifications
High School diploma or equivalent, plus at least two years of relevant experience
Demonstrated understanding of basic principles of media relations/PR.
Familiarity with monitoring/analytics tools, such as Onklusive, Critical Mention and Meltwater.
Experience interacting with journalists.
Demonstrated problem solver with proven successful organizational skills.
Demonstrated ability to successfully communicate and collaborate with individuals and teams at all levels of the organization.
Professional proficiency in written and spoken English
Professional proficiency in MS Office suite
Willingness and ability to work outside of normal office hours as necessitated by breaking emergencies.
Demonstrated commitment to fostering an environment of diversity, inclusion, and belonging.
Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of multimedia asset gathering.
Experience in international settings.
Foreign language skills, particularly Spanish, French or Arabic
