ESOL Hourly Instructor (Remote, Evenings & Saturdays)

Overview:
Adult English Language and Literacy (AELL) is the direct service provider of ESOL and adult literacy instruction for the Library. They use professional teachers to offer free instruction to adult patrons in reading, writing, speaking and listening from a 0 to 8th grade level. Through formal classes in language and literacy, as well as elective offerings such as English conversation and citizenship preparation groups, AELL has taken on the charge to expand ESOL instruction in the Library and through both in person and online instruction.

The Library’s Hourly Online ESOL Instructors support the mission of AELL in leading classes in language and literacy during 3 10-week instructional cycles in the fall, winter, and spring. The fall 2021 instructional cycle runs October 25 – December 18. Winter cycle runs January 24-April 2, and spring cycle runs April 25-June 30. Additional hours may be available between instructional cycles to assist with new student testing and placement, but are not guaranteed. Extra hours are made available based on Best Plus and TABE Administrator certification, student demand, and budget availability.

Principal Responsibilities:
Working with the Assistant Director and the Hub Manager, hourly instructors will:

Teach ESOL classes that promote English language proficiency for students assessed at NRS levels 1-6

Follow the prescribed curriculum in a communicative language teaching environment during class-time.

Instruct adult ESOL students in classes and learning experiences which will lead to the achievement of their educational and personal goals

Assist in the managed enrollment process to recruit and maintain students and student records

Maintain daily attendance records

Prepare weekly lesson plans for each session based on the curriculum

Required Education & Experience:
Bachelor’s degree required, with training and/or experience in ESOL.

Experience teaching adults both in person and online.

Minimum Qualifications:
Strong interpersonal skills. Ability to work well with a variety of people, in a multicultural setting, involving a variety of team situations.

Experience administering standardized assessments

Successfully demonstrated knowledge of technology-assisted learning, instructional software, video, audio and distance learning preferred.

Successfully demonstrated experience using Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and Zoom

Preferred Qualifications:
Multilingual candidates preferred (Spanish, Chinese, Arabic, preferred).

NYS TESOL certification

Physical Duties:
Limited physical effort is required

Lifting up to 30 lbs. required

May require travel within NYC

Starting Salary: USD $45.00/Hr. Hours: This is a remote work assignment with classes running Monday-Thursday 6pm-8pm and Saturdays 10am-2pm (15 instructional hours per week, including prep) with occasional onsite meetings and training required. Union / Non Union: Non Union
