Information & Resource Specialist Student Internship (Designated for African Nova Scotian / Person of African Descent Students)

Situation:
The YMCA of Greater Halifax/Dartmouth provides programs and services to people in the Halifax Regional Municipality encompassing the cities of Halifax and Dartmouth and the surrounding communities, as well as across the province of Nova Scotia. The Association has over 165 years of a rich tradition in meeting the changing needs of the community. Our YMCA provides services encompassing Health and Wellness, Employment, Childcare, Residential and Camp, Immigrant Services and Leadership Development. The Association employs 150 full-time and part-time staff and the community benefits from the annual contribution of over 300 YMCA volunteers.

Nature & Scope:
The YMCA of Greater Halifax/Dartmouth Employment Program delivers a comprehensive service for unemployed individuals in the HRM and surrounding areas. We provide one-on-one coaching, employment assessments, needs determination, case management, job development as well as linking clients to appropriate community resources. Reporting to the Manager of the YMCA Employment Centers, the Information & Resource Specialist Intern will work with the employment team to provide information, support and job search guidance.

This position is designated to African Nova Scotians who live within Preston Township.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Perform administrative support tasks; answering phones and routing messages to appropriate staff person
  • Greet clients at the front reception desk
  • Engaging and Translation for our Arabic speaking community to support job search and employment
  • Sit in on case management session to provide language support to staff and client
  • Represent the center to visitors in a professional, pleasant and courteous manner
  • Update and keep current all job postings, local labor market information
  • Register individuals for and workshops and information sessions
  • Respond to inquiries from the public and clients
  • Assist with computer use, and spell check and proof read resumes
  • Assist with the completion and submission of on line applications
  • Assist clients with photocopying, and faxing emailing of documents
  • Participate in training offered by the YMCA and partners as it relates to the position.

Please note, hours for this position may vary, and some services and components of the job may be completed remotely as a result of COVID 19.

  • Presently enrolled as a full-time student and returning to school in September 2021

  • Should demonstrate strong interpersonal skills and communication skills

  • Ability to deal with and defuse conflict situations
