Background
The Refugee Self-Reliance Initiative (RSRI), co-hosted by the Women’s Refugee Commission and RefugePoint, is a joint effort by a coalition of organizations, government agencies, foundations, research institutes, and other partners focused on promoting opportunities for refugees to become self-reliant and achieve a better quality of life. The aim of this initiative is to reach 5 million refugees with self-reliance programming in five years, and ultimately help usher in a needed paradigm shift in refugee response. The coalition is building three mutually reinforcing strategies to achieve its goals—programming, measurement, and advocacy—with the aim of building an evidence base for effective programming and promoting successful refugee self-reliance strategies among key decision-makers and responders.
The RSRI serves as a global convening and learning space for partners interested in promoting refugee self-reliance. Starting with the measurement pillar, the RSRI collaboratively developed the Self-Reliance Index (SRI), an open source global tool created to measure a refugee household’s journey toward self-reliance over time. Use of the SRI is expected to feed into the programming and advocacy pillars by helping to build an evidence base for enhancing refugee self-reliance opportunities and environments.
With Covid-19, the global landscape has evolved further, with refugee self-reliance and resilience more important than ever. The RSRI has an excellent opportunity to build on existing frameworks such as the Global Compact on Refugees and Sustainable Development Goals to support global leaders to achieve the goals set out in country level Comprehensive Refugee Response Frameworks and Global Refugee Forum pledges to fund, implement and enable refugee self-reliance.
The RSRI Developing Humanitarian Leaders Fellowship provides an opportunity for the leaders of tomorrow to learn about the humanitarian field and global refugee response programs as they contribute to the development and evolution of the field. This Fellowship will concentrate on advocacy, communications, and policy toward the achievement of the Global Compact on Refugees.
Key Responsibilities
Expand the RSRI self-reliance policy platform
Research and identify information needed to populate the self-reliance policy platform; integrate feedback, input into platform.
Coordinate with the RefugePoint web design team for platform development.
Recommend opportunities to share and highlight the work of the platform through SM, and associated networks.
Advocacy and Communications support
Collaborate with RSRI team and partner organizations to prepare self-reliance focused agenda ahead of the December 2021 High-Level Meeting, including global and diverse civil society perspectives.
Work with RSRI and WRC/RP communications teams to collect and develop communications materials (e.g., media stories, photographs, video footage for reports and social media).
Administrative support
Contribute to upgrading standard external-facing documents/decks.
RSRI team support as needed.
Fellowship project
Identify and research RSRI gaps or opportunity to further enhance refugee self-reliance.
Education & Skills
Degree from an accredited university in education, public policy, or related field.
Strong written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills; strong attention to detail.
Solid diplomatic skills: the ability to effectively liaise with a variety of internal and external contacts.
Ability to work independently.
Ability to multi-task and meet deadlines while paying attention to detail.
Knowledge of common software (MS Office) and graphic design skills, including ability to create aesthetically pleasing and engaging materials for a wide audience. Experience with Tableau a plus.
Languages: Fluency in English is required; preferred working knowledge of French, Arabic, or Spanish.
Experience in program areas such as self-reliance, disabilities, adolescent programming and livelihoods/cash a plus.
