About the Opportunity:
Northeastern University’s Khoury College of Computer Sciences is looking to hire a postdoctoral research associate. The postdoc will conduct research under the aegis of the NEH-funded project on “Automatic Collation for Diversifying Corpora: Improving Handwritten Text Recognition (HTR) for Arabic-script Manuscripts” and more generally on digital humanities and natural language processing at Northeastern’s NULab for Texts, Maps, and Networks
Responsibilities:
Performs basic or applied research of a limited scope, primarily using existing theories and methods. Assists the supervisor in the interpretation and publication of results and grants. Maintains the laboratory and may exercise functional supervision over supporting research staff. Primary responsibility is ensuring that the research is complete.
Qualifications:
Candidates should have a research profile in natural language processing, computer vision, optical character and handwritten text recognition, data mining historical texts, or related areas of machine learning or digital humanities. The chosen candidate will be responsible for using distant supervision and language modeling techniques for improving and adapting transcription models for Arabic-script languages, under the supervision of Prof. David Smith.
Must have a Ph.D. or equivalent; be able to undertake substantially full-time research or scholarship; work under the supervision of a senior scholar.

Additional Information:
The initial appointment will be for 12 months, renewable for a second year, beginning September 1, 2021. The annual salary will start at $67,000 and comes with a full benefits package.
