Position Summary
The Nova Scotia EIBI Program provides treatment for preschool age children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and training for families. The program is offered through the Nova Scotia Health Authority (NSHA) and the IWK Health Centre in partnership with Nova Scotia Hearing and Speech Centres. The main form of treatment, Pivotal Response Treatment, uses motivational strategies and the principles of applied behavior analysis (ABA) to facilitate development of children’s communication, play and other functional skills. The EIBI program has a strong commitment to ongoing learning for the EIBI teams, so that children and their families receive similar services across the province. There is a strong leadership framework for the provincial program. Treatment is provided by a coordinated team consisting of parents, one-to-one implementers (ASW/AI/PI), Clinical Interventionists (CIs), and consultant Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs).
The EIBI Provincial Trainer (PT) is responsible to train EIBI staff in skills and competencies specific to implementation of the EIBI Service Delivery Model across the province of Nova Scotia (IWK and eight NSHA teams). Provincial Trainers provide clinical supervision and assess ongoing maintenance of required competencies with all EIBI staff across the province. The Provincial Trainer trains EIBI staff to build the competencies essential to meet their job requirements. These include but are not limited to training in Pivotal Response Treatment (PRT), Positive Behavior Support, and Motivational Interviewing. Provincial Trainers provide advanced training and support for Clinical Interventionists and Speech Language Pathologists to become trainers in PRT, in PRT fidelity coding, and to integrate developing knowledge and skills into individual child programming. They provide additional supervision and support to individual teams for clinical and teaming challenges. Provincial Trainers are part of quality performance measurement and support; they provide performance feedback to CI’s, SLP’s; and PI’s.. Provincial Trainers are responsible to maintain their own skills and to continue to develop their training and supervision skills to ensure that they are contributing to consistent, quality service delivery where continuous improvement thrives. Based on staffing of the CI roles, and workload, the PT may be required to assume more responsibilities as a CI to support the pod(s).
