The Developing Language and Literacy Lab, directed by Dr. Carol Scheffner Hammer at Teachers College, Columbia University, is involved in an exciting project, the ExCELL Professional Development program (ExCELL PD). Research Assistants are needed to aid with the translation and creation of materials in non-English languages for use with young bilingual children and their parents and teachers.
Job Summary/Basic Function:
The Developing Language and Literacy Lab, directed by Dr. Carol Scheffner Hammer at Teachers College, Columbia University, is involved in an exciting project, the ExCELL Professional Development program (ExCELL PD). Research Assistants are needed to aid with the translation and creation of materials in non-English languages for use with young bilingual children and their parents and teachers.
Successful candidates will be able to speak, read and write in English and at least one other language including: Arabic, Bengali/Bangla, Chinese (Mandarin and/or Cantonese), Haitian Creole, Korean, and/or Urdu. Candidates will ideally have an undergraduate background in language development, linguistics, early childhood education, child development, psychology, or assessment. Previous translation experience is highly desirable. Knowledge of WordPress is also beneficial. Candidates must have native or native-like proficiency in at least one non-English language, and should be conscientious and detail oriented. Candidates must be able to contribute an average of 5 hours/week to this project.
A training on project materials and translation strategies will take place in late September or early October. Successful candidates may also be invited to continue this work in winter/spring of 2022.
Responsibilities:
- Assist with the translation and creation of materials in non-English languages
- Communicate regularly with project supervisors and other members of the translation team
- Electronic material maintenance tasks as needed
- Assist with the preparation of physical materials (such as binders for teachers)
- Other tasks related to the project as needed
Minimum Qualifications:
- Native or native-like proficiency in English and a non-English language
- Able to perform text translations from English into a non-English language
- Able to travel to Teachers College for work if needed (generally work can be completed remotely, but travel to the lab may be required to set up physical materials for teachers; negotiable on case-by-case basis)
- Able to commit to 5 hours per week
