REVISER, ARABIC (2 POSTS)

These positions are located in the Arabic Translation Service, Documentation Division, Department for General Assembly and Conference Management (DGACM), New York. The Arabic Translation Service provides translation of parliamentary documents from English and other UN official languages into Arabic. The incumbents work under the general supervision of the Chief of the Arabic Translation Service.

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the Revisers will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Revises translations and original summary records dealing with a broad range of subjects dealt with by the United Nations, while meeting or exceeding required workload standards.
  • Translates, mostly without revision, texts covering a broad range of subjects dealt with by the United Nations, particularly those subjects requiring experience and recognized proficiency, while meeting or exceeding required workload standards. Makes full use of standard computer-assisted-translation (CAT) tools and actively contributes to their utilization and implementation of any related IT tools and improvements.
  • Drafts, mostly without revision, summary records and serves as monitor of précis-writing teams, while meeting or exceeding required workload standards.
  • Develops new terminology for use where none exists in the target language.
  • Carries out linguistic research and provides input to multilingual terminology databases and related reference tools.
  • Counsels and assists translators/précis-writers and briefs them on the procedures and practices of the Service, terminology and a broad range of subjects, as required.
  • Participates in the setting of terminology standards.
  • Supervises the work of small groups of translators/précis-writers.
  • Assists the Chief of Service and Senior Revisers in managerial, administrative, operational, and supervisory responsibilities of the Service, including by acting as First Reporting Officer, as required.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Education

A first-level degree from a university or institution of equivalent status is required. Candidates for this position must have passed the combined United Nations Language Competitive Examination for Translators/Précis-writers, Editors, Verbatim Reporters and Copy Preparers/Proofreaders/Production Editors in the relevant language or any relevant United Nations language competitive examinations in the relevant language held before 2017.

Work Experience

A minimum of five years of experience in translation, précis-writing, editing, self-revision, verbatim reporting, copy preparing, proofreading or production editing is required.

Experience in the use of standard computer-assisted-translation (CAT) tools is required.

Out of the aforementioned experience, three years of experience at the United Nations or a similar international organization is required.

Experience as a self-revised translator is desirable.

Languages

Fluency in Arabic, which must be the candidate’s main language, is required. Applicants must also have knowledge of English as tested by the relevant United Nations language competitive examination. Knowledge of one other official United Nations language as tested by the relevant United Nations language competitive examination is desirable.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by a competency-based interview.
