Settlement Worker in Schools (SWIS)

The Multicultural Centre of the Yukon (MCY) is a division of the Yukon Tourism Education Council (YTEC). MCY is a provider of community social services with a holistic approach to community development. We provide programs and services in the Yukon for immigrants of culturally diverse and ethnic backgrounds.

OVERVIEW

The Settlement Workers in Schools (SWIS) Program offers school-based settlement services by providing newcomer students (elementary or high school) and their families with information and support on issues related to integration into the new community. Information on schools, education, community resources, and family resources (immigration, language training, health services, family support, transportation, recreation housing and employment). SWIS worker’s responsibilities include connecting with immigrant students and their families, collaborating with teachers to ensure that the needs of immigrant students are addressed and acting as a liaison between the schools and the parents of the immigrant students.

Salary: $30.00 per hour

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Establish and maintain contact with immigrant students and their families in order to determine their needs.

Provide information and orientation about Canadian culture, service systems, and the Yukon Education system to immigrant families in order to enhance the settlement process.

Facilitates communication between school, students, parents and community agencies.

Meet with school staff, counselors, ELL teachers, and school based teams as required.

Assist the MCY Youth Coordinator with programming needs.

Assists parents and students with filling out a variety of forms as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor of Education or Bachelor of Social Work or equivalent degree. ( School based, in class experience is an asset)

Ability to work effectively with a variety of parents, children, volunteers, professionals, community members and people from diverse cultural backgrounds

Broad knowledge of the school system and a willingness to gain an understanding of Yukon Education policies and procedures

High proficiency with computer programs

Fully bilingual in English (Level 8+ desired). Fluency in a settlement language other than English is an asset (Tagalog, Arabic, Mandarin, Japanese, Korean, Punjabi, Hindi, Vietnamese)

Ability to work well independently and as a team member

Effective written and oral communication skills

WORKING CONDITIONS

Valid Class 5 Yukon driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle.

Must obtain a Vulnerable Sector Criminal Record Check

Some travel to the communities is required
