Will be responsible for providing case management for refugee students and their families in the Newcomers program by identifying needs and refer students and their families to applicable programs to help assist in their success in school.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Assists in implementation of parent meetings for newcomer families
Assist with case management of newcomer students
Assist with school based interpretation in emergency situations
Works with schools Community Schools Coordinator and/or /family liaison to access community resources for Refugee students
Works with school-based leaders to coordinate events related to newcomer students and families
Works with individuals and small groups in the classroom to reinforce material introduced by the teacher.
Serves as a model in developing students’ language and behavior.
Collects, prepares and arranges resource material for use by certified personnel.
Operates support equipment and monitors testing or make-up work by students.
Maintains classroom records, prepares reports as requested by the classroom teacher or principal, scores tests, processes books, manages supplies and classroom equipment as needed.
Monitors student activities in classrooms, school grounds, hallways, lunchrooms, field trips, bus loading areas, etc.
Provides support for non-instructional classroom duties such as monitoring snacks, restrooms, clothing areas, etc.
Participates in teacher-parent conferences and meetings as requested by classroom teacher.
Trains students in self-help skills including eating, toileting, hygiene, behavior management and academic skills.
Consults with principal and other school-based leaders to effectively coordinate and implement outreach to families.
Consults with principal and teachers to create on-going mechanisms for families to play various roles at school and home.
Performs other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor.
Conducts outreach in collaboration with the school Family Liaisons to increase family engagement, including conducting home visits.
PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND EXPERIENCE:
Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
Interpersonal skills with diverse populations in-person and on the telephone.
Proficient with word processing, database and spreadsheet software.
Knowledge of the needs of youth in refugee populations.
Knowledge of Albuquerque’s community.
REQUIREMENTS:
High School Diploma or GED.
Four (4) years of experience working with families, schools and/or refugees
Ability to speak Swahili, Arabic, Dari or another language spoken by APS Refugee Students
