Background

People in Need (PIN) is an international, non-profit organization providing humanitarian and development assistance in over 20 countries worldwide. Formed in 1992 in the Czech Republic, PIN has grown to be the biggest organisation of its kind in post-communist Europe, providing relief where it is needed, and empowering civil society at home and abroad.

PIN is maintaining a strong presence in Iraq, and has gradually extended its activities across the Governorates of Ninewa, Salah Al-din, Kirkuk and the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. Typical recipients of our aid are internally displaced persons, returnees, and people who survived the fighting near their homes and meet the pre-defined criteria of vulnerability.

Apart from humanitarian aid, PIN is currently working on long-term programmes supporting restoring livelihoods, education, access to water and hygiene. These programmes should facilitate people´s return to their original homes and support the stabilisation process after the defeat and removal of IS

Program Overview:

PIN is implementing a WFP funded project working on strengthening of food security and livelihoods in rural and urban areas of Al Alam (Tikrit) and Al Hajjaj (Beiji) in Salah Al Din. As part of the initial stages of the project 375 beneficiaries will be selected for a Cash for work program on cleaning and rehabilitation of agricultural infrastructure, while 100 beneficiaries will be selected to receive kitchen gardens, and further 30 will be chosen for the distribution of greenhouses. 100 beneficiaries will also gain access to food processing training and tools. Moreover, PIN will work to strengthen business environment in the given areas by supporting 30 small scale business involved in food retail and also organize extensive Training of Trainers for prospective agricultural extension workers who will further support farmers in target areas on climate smart approaches to agriculture.

 

This position is required for the project component of Training of Trainers, in which the recruited consultants with develop a training curriculum for 50 trainees (25 in each locations) and conduct a 2-month training combining classroom-based education with field demonstrations. The expected topics with cover conservation and climate-smart agriculture, basics of nutrition and climate-sensitive nutrition as related to agricultural production, and knowledge of agricultural market environments. The solicited period of contract covers the period of the preparation of the curriculum, the training itself, and short follow-up on the achieved results.

 

At the same time, PIN has a concurrent project by IHF targeting Cash for work, small scale agricultural production, and cash assistance in the Areas of Shirgat, Beiji, and Tikrit.

Purpose of the trainings:

 

  • The Training of Trainers is targeted at participants with moderate to advanced knowledge of agriculture, who have the potential to serve as extension workers in target areas.
  • Due to the difficult climatic conditions Iraq has been facing, including less predictable rainfall and increasingly severe drought periods, as well as decline in the availability of water for agriculture, this training is designed to strengthen their knowledge of agricultural practices suited to the current conditions, while also including techniques used to increase agricultural productivity without causing harm to the environment. Knowledge of basic (climate-sensitive) nutrition and the significance of agricultural production in achieving nutritional targets will also feature in the trainings. A Draft of the curriculum has been prepared by PIN in consultation with relevant stakeholders, and the selected trainers will continue its development in collaboration with the PIN and PIN Climate Change Advisor. The application of selected topics will be targeted both at mainstream agriculture, greenhouse production, and small-scale agricultural production at household level.
  • Understanding of the agricultural markets in the target areas in order to provide effective information to farmers will also be included in the training program.
  • Towards the end of the trainings, successful graduates of the training will be selected to continue work through and extension service to farmers in target areas for the duration of the projects.
  • The selected trainers will work as a team, and are expected to cover the selected topics through a combination of their knowledge and experience.

 

Tasks of the consultant trainer:

 

  • In consultation with the PIN team and relevant stakeholders identified by PIN, complete the curriculum outline for the 2-month Training of Trainers. The training will include a combination of classroom-based education and field visits with practical demonstration (specific available locations as per the needs of the training will be agreed with the PIN supervising manager).
  • Based on their experience and objectives of the training, design (or adapt existing) training materials for the duration of the course.
  • Deliver 2-months training of trainers to the targeted trainees.
  • Collaborate with project team and MEAL team in the selection of trainees for the ToTs based on partners recommendation.
  • Utilise available knowledge and information on climate smart agriculture, modern approaches to agriculture (for example advancements in fertilization techniques, intercropping, sewing and harvesting, etc.).
  • Supervise project trainees and foster their knowledge development.
  • Regularly update the project team on the implementation of the Training of Trainers, including recommendations and suggestions for adjustment.
  • Develop a mid-term as well as final report on the implementation of the Training of Trainers.
  • Liaise with partner stakeholders (e.g. the University of Tikrit, Departments of Agriculture, etc. for purposes of the implementation of the Training of Trainers and refer to the PIN project team in case of any issues.
  • Consult with the PIN team on needs related to field visit and practical demonstrations (e.g. to consider security implications, and to leverage partnerships existing under the ongoing project).
  • Prepare and oversee relevant exams testing the knowledge gained by the trainees during and at the end of the implemented Training of Trainers.
  • Lead on the selection of well performing trainees for continuation of their involvement as extension workers to target farmer communities in Beiji and Tikrit.

 

Available assets

The training consultants will be able to rely on:

  • Training classrooms facilitated by PIN and other partners.
  • IT equipment for their own use and for the delivery of training in a classroom setting.
  • When required, guidance from PIN Climate Change Advisor in tailoring the Training with up to date information of climate related developments.
  • Support of the Project Team in aligning research activities with ongoing PIN engagement with targeted communities.
  • PIN enumerators for data gathering according to mutually agreed resource allocation requirements.

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  • Masters/engineer degree in relevant discipline (agronomy, agricultural sciences, environmental science, etc.), or Bachelor degree equivalent with substantive experience related to the solicited activities is required.
  • Experience working in the field with farming communities is desirable (preferably in Salah Al Din governorate or surrounding areas).
  • At least 3 years of experience working on capacity building in agriculture. Experience with research is welcome.
  • Solid understanding of climate change principles and its impacts on agriculture.
  • Fluent in Arabic and intermediary English language.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Able to speak/communicate professionally with project participants and stakeholders.
  • NGO and organizational experience is an advantage – aware on the general rules and regulations of the organization, commitments towards neutrality and safeguarding throughout the organisations project activities.
  • Able to adapt within a work environment containing individuals of multiple and various cultural and educational backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated gender awareness and understanding of working with individuals with vulnerability.
    • Ability to plan activities and follow accordingly.
    • Timeliness in the delivery of outputs and respect towards agreed schedules.
