Context/Reporting line:
Under the overall supervision of the Head of Programme Support Unit and the direct supervision of the Media
and Communications Officer, the Translator/Visibility Assistant will be responsible for the following key
duties:
Core Functions / Responsibilities
The scale of IOM’s response in Iraq is growing exponentially, in several sectors including community
stabilization, return and recovery assistance, migration management/governance and humanitarian
assistance. It is essential for the Public Information Unit to communication about the organization’s efforts
in Arabic, Iraq’s primary language. The translator will contribute to IOM Iraq’s communications output by
preparing documents of all types in clear Arabic for internal and external parties and support the Public
Information Unit with administrative tasks to bolster the public face of the mission’s work.
Core Functions / Responsibilities:
1. Translate from English to Arabic, and vice-versa, a full range of documents, reports, formal texts,
manuscripts, official correspondence, publications and other material, as given to the incumbent by
programme officers.
2. Produce accurate and complete versions in the target language using the most appropriate range of
vocabulary and the commonly accepted or established equivalents of professional, scientific or
technical concepts and terms.
3. Review and proof-read content for accuracy and quality, including spelling, grammar, punctuation,
and syntax.
4. Ensure the content style is in conformity with IOM media standards.
5. Manage and coordinate fulfilment of IOM and donor visibility needs for IOM projects, by
coordinating with PI officers, Program Managers, logistics and procurement to create purchase
orders, determine prices of visibility and print materials
6. Track orders, receipt and distribution of visibility and print materials in the main and suboffices,
and track stock of visibility items in coordination with Warehouse staff.
7. Assist in verifying appropriate gender awareness in all IOM communications.

8. Perform such other duties as may be assigned.

Qualifications & Preferred Skills

Education:
 University degree in literature, translation, languages or a relevant field from an accredited academic
university or institute.
Experience and Skills:
 At least three years of professional translation experience.
 Excellent inter-personal skills.
 Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite.
 Able to work without direct supervision and be results oriented.
 Delivers on set objectives in hardship situations.
 High level of computer literacy, especially word processing software and Microsoft Office Suite.
 Knowledge of Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, and knowledge of photography/videography
are advantages.
 Effectively coordinates actions with other colleagues within the unit and throughout the mission.
 Experience in an international, humanitarian/development organization an advantage
 Organizational, communication and presentational skills.
 Ability to work effectively and harmoniously with colleagues from different cultures and professional
backgrounds.
 Travel throughout the region when required
 Good computer skills
Languages:
 Fluency in English and Arabic is required. Fluency in Kurdish is a strong advantage.
