Family Service Toronto (FST) helps people face a wide variety of life challenges. For over 100
years, we have worked with individuals and families destabilized by precarious mental health
and/or socioeconomic circumstances, to achieve greater resilience and stability in more just
and supportive communities. We achieve this through our direct service work of intervention
and prevention which includes counselling, peer support and education; knowledge building;
and system-level work including social action, advocacy, community building and working
with partners to strengthen the sector.
Healthy Families, Healthy Communities (HFHC) is a community-based program for newcomer
women, seniors and youth. It provides programs, which serve individuals from specific linguistic
and cultural communities i.e. Afghan Iranian, Latino-Hispanic, Somali and Arabic-speaking
communities. Seniors, women and youth from these communities are offered programs that are
in their first language and are facilitated by staff with a lived experience in these communities.
Programs include peer support groups, educational workshops and community events.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide community-based workshops for youth and women on topics that are relevant
to new immigrants and refugees
- Provide participants with appropriate information and referrals, related to mental and
physical health, well-being and navigating the healthcare, legal and educational
systems
- Assist with outreach to the Iranian community at large to raise awareness of the
Healthy Families, Healthy Communities program and to recruit participants
- Assist with any related research activities, including on-line research, focus groups
and/or telephone interviews
- Provide instrumental support to participants
- Maintain up-to-date notes, records, statistics and other data as required
- Assist in the facilitation of peer support groups, when required
- Translate workshop materials and provide interpretation when required.
- Ensure the regular and timely recording of data as required by funder(s) and FST
- Assist with special events
QUALIFICATIONS:
- College diploma or equivalent education and experience, with a minimum of three
years of experience working in the social service field
- 2 to 3 years’ experience working with youth and women
- Experience providing educational workshops on a range of topics pertinent to
women and seniors (e.g. gender-based violence, stress management and other
coping skills, elder abuse, health and wellness) using principles of adult education
- Understanding of the peer support model
- Experience working with service systems and an understanding of barriers to
accessing these systems
- Experience in planning and implementing a series of workshops
- Lived experience within the Farsi-speaking community and the ability to speak Farsi,
as well as English
- Good listening, written and verbal communication skills
- Good computer skills and experience using a computer database
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a member of a team
- Extensive knowledge or community resources and supports for women and seniors
- Demonstrated commitment to principles of cultural competency, social justice, anti-
oppression and equity and inclusion
- Flexibility in hours of work, including some evening and/or weekend work
- Ability to travel throughout the City of Toronto
- Criminal reference check with Vulnerable Sector Search completed within the past
12 months
