Duties

Basic Function of Position:

Serves as the Administrative Clerk and Translator to the Defense Attaché Office (DAO), assists the Senior Defense Official/Defense Attaché (SDO/DATT) and other DAO staff as required. Drafts and translates unclassified correspondence in both English and Turkish.  Greets and assists visitors, prepares Attaché’s invitations, maintains distribution lists, maintains files, social calendar for SDO/DATT and other office staff.  Prepares, processes, and delivers correspondence, under the SDO/DATT’s guidance, including diplomatic note requests for U.S. military over-flight and landing clearances to the Turkish Government and other associated agencies, ministries, and companies.  Provides routine translator and cultural assistance for the DAO Personnel.

Qualifications and Evaluations

Requirements:
EXPERIENCE:  At least 3-years’ experience in secretarial or office administrative work required.  Experience in dealing with public and knowledge of the military system.

JOB KNOWLEDGE:  Familiarity of culture and practices in Turkey.  Extensive knowledge of Turkish military, political, economic, and social structures and protocol; institutions; historical background; and key personnel desired.  Administrative duties; filing, typing, etc.

Education Requirements:
    • Completion of 2-year college/university degree required.
Evaluations:
 

LANGUAGE:  Level IV fluency in both oral and written English and Turkish is required. This may be tested.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Drafts letters, diplomatic notes, and faxes. Must be fluent in English and Turkish to permit error-free translations.  Able to cultivate and maintain access to personnel contacts at all levels of the national, regional, provincial, and local governments.  Incumbent is required to exercise considerable diplomacy, sound judgement, and organizational skills on a daily basis to execute a myriad of activities.  Must be available to work on evening, weekends, early morning, and U.S. and Turkish holidays as needed.

The pay plan is assigned at the time of the conditional offer letter by the HR Office.
