Our Young Global Professionals are an integral part of the Africa Center. Most of our work involves an all-hands-on-deck approach that requires interns to actively engage with our events, publications, and strategies. As a result, this position exposes interns to the writing and publishing procedure, logistical elements of event planning, and the process of creating strategic initiatives within a think tank.
Interns work closely with Africa Center staff to provide important research and logistical support to the Center. They are also encouraged to participate in and attend events hosted by other programs at the Atlantic Council.
The successful candidates will have a passion for the work, an entrepreneurial ethos, and a collegial spirit; they will be an effective communicator; and will enjoy learning and growing in a fast-paced organization. Demonstrated interest in international affairs, specifically African Affairs, through classwork and/or experience is preferred.
Job responsibilities
- Conduct research to support the activities of the Center.
- Handle logistical elements for program events.
- Manage program contacts database.
- Participate in regular Africa Center meetings and monthly Atlantic Council meetings.
- Draft formal correspondence to government officials and invitations for events.
- Take notes at Council roundtables and strategy sessions for program archives.
- Track Africa Center media metrics.
- Assist the Center in promoting publications, events, and press mentions.
- Assist the Center with business development activities.
Qualifications
- Must be at least a college junior in good standing, a graduate student, or a recent graduate, preferably majoring in international affairs, African studies, economics, or a related field
- Must have at least a 3.0 GPA (out of 4.0) scale, or equivalent from a non-U.S. institution.
- Ability to work full-time (40 hrs/week) preferred.
- Must have excellent research, writing, and people skills.
- Must work well with others and interact professionally with senior officials.
- Must be detail-oriented and able to work in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to read and write in Arabic, French, Portuguese, or another widely-spoken language on the continent is highly desired.
