Position Summary

The mission of the Data Team at NYU Global TIES for Children is to deliver high-quality data products to research teams and partner organizations in a timely manner. The Data Associate will join the Data Team and support the Primary Education Learning in Emergencies (PELE) team by managing, cleaning, and documenting data collected via paper & tablet surveys, as well as supervising temporary personnel hired as needed.

Responsibilities

Prepare data processing pipelines to streamline data collection.

Conduct data cleaning and documentation for assigned research projects.

Communicate data status to research team.

Recommend protocols to safeguard data integrity during data collection for future projects.

Coordinate with Senior Data Associate and Research Scientists to gauge Data Team need for each project.

Identify data resources and provide support for data collection.

Provide support for internal capacity building projects.

The appointment is available immediately and until December 31, 2022, with the potential for extension pending satisfactory performance and budgetary approval.

At New York University’s Global TIES for Children we design, evaluate and advise on programs and policies to improve the lives of children and youth in the most vulnerable regions across the globe. Led by University Professors Larry Aber and Hiro Yoshikawa, we work with some of the world’s leading non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and with governments in low-income (LI) and conflict-affected (CA) countries on developing and evaluating innovative approaches to promoting the health, education, and social development of children and their communities. Together with our key strategic partner organizations, our work leverages cutting-edge scientific methods and interdisciplinary collaboration to:

Generate actionable evidence to promote child and youth development by conducting and evaluating powerful strategies to transform relevant “social settings” (i.e., classrooms, schools, families, communities, etc.) that are key drivers of children’s learning and well-being;

Communicate actionable evidence by engaging diverse stakeholders across sectors and regions and disseminating a rigorous evidence base to inform program and policy decisions for children and youth in LI and CA countries; and

Build human, administrative, and institutional capacity for a robust global science and practice through the provision of professional development and training activities.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree required. BS in computer science or BA/BS in quantitative background (statistics, mathematics, physics, etc) desired.

Commitment to the goals of the Center must be demonstrated, including with previous social science research experience.

Strong communication skills.

Experience working in real-world scenarios with R required; experience in Java or Python a plus.

Experience working with git required.

Experience working with databases and cleaning data required.

Understanding of data confidentiality principles and having impeccable research ethics are required.

Experience working with RESTful APIs, AWS desired.

Has good time-management skills and can be self-directed.

Extraordinary logic, quantitative and analytical skills; deductive reasoning and problem-solving skills.

Excellent organizational skills.

Arabic or Spanish language skills a plus.

Has a good balance between the ability to follow specific instructions and the use of critical thinking to propose new solutions.

Can work well independently and in a multidisciplinary, multi-country team.
