Refugee Youth Coordinator

Job Description

Are you interested in working with youth in the refugee community? The Department of Workforce Services (DWS) is looking for someone energetic to fill the Refugee Youth Coordinator position in the Refugee Service Office (RSO).

Principle Duties

The Refugee Youth Coordinator will work closely with refugee youth, community and educational partners to address gaps in services for refugee youth. Duties in this position will include:

Developing training programs, workshops and educational events.

Working closely with at-risk youth and their families through home visits and/or other methods to develop stability plans and/or intervention strategies.

Recruiting refugee youth for events and activities at the Utah Refugee Center (URC).

Organizing, recruiting and leading the Refugee Youth Leadership Series.

Planning and implementing refugee youth focused programming at the (URC).

Supporting and developing existing youth programs (Public Speaking, Homework help, Girls Lobby, Girls Who Code and Youth Leadership).

Coordinating with partner programs (4H, REFUGE).

Working with supervisors to improve curriculums.

Ensuring proper outreach, organization and implementation.

Ensuring classes are delivered on time and well attended.

Ensuring curriculum is prepared in advance and presenters are well prepared prior to class.

Supporting outreach to ensure a minimum of well-suited students.

Coordinating with Salt Lake, Granite and other school districts to identify issues and solutions at the district level.

Developing a strong understanding and pathways for refugee youth service providers and school districts.

Supporting refugee intake: meet with walk-in clients to conduct an assessment and assist clients with basic issues or refer them to appropriate resources.

Collaborating and supporting Refugee Capacity Building Organization Grant (RCBO) recipient youth programs to ensure they successfully implement funded programs.

The Ideal Candidate

The model candidate for this position is someone who:
Is familiar with programs and services available to the refugee community.

Has a minimum of three years work experience in education or youth development, preferably with refugee or immigrant youth.

Has a minimum of three years work experience involving significant coordination responsibilities.

Has demonstrated cultural competence and/or cross-cultural international experience.

Has ability to take initiative and problem-solve effectively in high stress situations.

Has second language proficiency in relevant languages (including : Arabic, Swahili, Dinka, French, Kirundi, Nepali, Somali, Kinyarwanda, Lingala, Farsi, Dari, Tigrinia and Burmese).

Is skilled in creating consensus around vision and team purpose.

Is available to work varied hours; days, evenings and weekends.

Must present a professional image and possess conflict resolution skills.

Possesses strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the refugee community.

Must be highly organized with the ability to work under pressure and handle multiple tasks.

Must be able to maintain high standards of confidentiality.

This position may be filled as a two year career mobility if an internal DWS applicant is selected.

Risks found in the typical office setting, which is adequately lighted, heated and ventilated, e.g., safe use of office equipment, avoiding trips and falls, observing fire regulations, etc.

Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to perform the work; however, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying light items; driving an automobile, etc. Special physical demands are not required to perform the work.
