The project has a new additional activity, called Development of the Agricultural Infrastructure through Rehabilitation and Expansion of Irrigation Channels in Shirgat. Mercy Hands will provide water to farmers through the rehabilitation and expansion of irrigation canals.

This work can be done through CFW and a contractor (which has certain machine and manpower) to perform certain duties. For example: suppling and installing a water pump, electricity transformers with their poles, wires and other accessories; cleaning the existed irrigation channels; and/or excavating new ones and casting these channels with cement.

 

The post holder will lead the selected farmers will receive water from Mercy Hands’ infrastructure on the condition that they will use their land as an example for the training and demonstration to others. The training and guidance will be done by Agriculture expert/trainer to target farmers to best use their lands regarding watering and irrigation of the land, climate change adaptation (such as drought resistance seeds, sampling), benefitting from resources, becoming familiar with modern agricultural methods. In addition, following up with farmers to ensure that they use their farming land in the most beneficial way possible.

During the demonstration plots, the agricultural expert will invite other selected farmers who is active farmer and other neighborhood farmers (maximally 10 farmers in each session) to apply what is in training curriculum to show the impact of the irrigation: for example, new crops, new seeds (drought resistance) and/or sampling (vegetables and fruits like strawberries), and introduction of drip irrigation for vegetable production.

Tasks and Responsibilities

The Agriculture Expert will be responsible develop a training material for farmer training in the demonstration plots and conduct the training. She/he will also close consultation with project staff.

The Agriculture Expert will specifically be responsible for the following;

Coordination with the local, coordinate with relevant local authorities and the community committee to identify and register the beneficiaries (farmer).

Develop farmer training material and conduct the training 

Lead the 4 demonstration plots selection

Communicate with local authorities to identify the irrigation channel

Monitor/Mentors for the irrigation structure, BNFs, and demonstration plots in compliance with the agreements, follow-up and support, and conducting post assessments.

Coordinate learning activities within the activity to support documentation and sharing of key lessons and achievements.

Represent project (output 7) in meetings with various stakeholders: Government of Iraq, the UNDP (donor) , public, private sector.

Given the nature of the work, staff is expected to be flexible and may be asked to carry out duties which are not specifically listed above. The job description may be revised after discussion between the post holder and Project Manager

Minimum 2-3 professional experience in agriculture mainly irrigation and Wash, preferably with NGOs.

Demonstrable understanding of NGO supporter development with at least two year of experience in a comparable role.

Experience in mentoring and monitoring farmers

 Experience on preparing training material and conducting training (adult training) at least one year

Experience in demonstration plots and training on the plots

Management and reporting skills

event organization and management

Computer literate – skilled and confident user in office applications such as MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint.

Excellent written and oral communication skills,

Demonstrated ability to work effectively with beneficiaries, and stakeholders from various institutions.

Full proficiency in spoken and written Arabic and good knowledge of English

Education:

University degree in agriculture or equivalent from a recognized institution.
