Translators (Arabic, French, Spanish) – Remote

The project:
The Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED) is a disaggregated data collection, analysis, and crisis mapping project. The ACLED team conducts analysis to describe, explore, and test conflict scenarios and makes both data and analysis open for free use by the public. ACLED material is regularly used to inform journalism, academic research, and public discourse on conflict, and to support the work of practitioners and policymakers. ACLED is the highest quality and most widely used real-time data and analysis source on political violence and protest around the world.

The role:
ACLED is recruiting ad hoc Translators to support the translation of various ACLED reports and products, both thematic and region-specific. The Translators will be asked to work on translations in an ad hoc fashion; as such, the position would be best suited to the current ACLED Researcher who wants some additional hours occasionally. The positions are fully remote and can be done from any location with reliable internet service. These are contractor positions.

ACLED is specifically interested in hiring Translators for Arabic, French, and Spanish languages.

The Translators will work directly with report authors, the analysis team, and the communications team to translate reports, executive summaries, social media content, etc. for ACLED’s audiences.

Specific roles and responsibilities:
Candidates who are selected should have familiarity with ACLED and preferably have experience translating complex analysis.

For those selected, the initial consultancy period will be from January 2022 to June 2022. After this, continuation may be possible, pending performance and availability of funding.

Skills and competencies:
Fluency in English (essential);

Fluency in one of the other key languages: Arabic, French, and/or Spanish (essential);

Experience in professional translation work (preferred);

Experience working to deadlines with limited supervision;

A high level of attention to detail and the ability to receive and incorporate feedback;

Research focus or professional experience related to conflict studies is a strong advantage;

Access to a computer, a reliable internet connection, email, and the Microsoft Office Suite.

Applications:
To apply, please submit a CV and cover letter detailing qualifications, experience, and specifically your language proficiency. Shortlisted candidates will be asked to complete a translation exercise as part of the evaluation.

Further information on the project is available online at acleddata.com. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Interested candidates are advised to apply early.
